SmartyPup is San Francisco's most experienced reward-based puppy training school with over 25 years of experience teaching exclusively puppies and adolescent dogs. We provide a structured, positive, and educational environment for puppies and their owners.
**Role Overview**:
- As a SmartyPup Day Camp Novice Trainer, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the training and care of puppies, similar to a preschool teacher or a day camp counselor. Your responsibilities include creating a nurturing and safe environment where puppies can learn and explore, ensuring their owners feel confident in their care.
**Responsibilities**:
- Daily puppy group management, socialization, and training sessions
- Monitor and manage puppy behavior, providing positive reinforcement for desired behaviors
- Support the lead trainer in implementing training programs tailored to each puppy's needs
- Maintain a clean and sanitary environment, including routine housekeeping tasks
- Provide regular updates to puppy owners about their puppies' progress
- Help organize and supervise educational activities and games to stimulate puppy learning
- Assist in maintaining daily records of puppy behavior, activities, and well-being
- Assist with basic grooming and bathing tasks as needed
**Training Program**:
- As part of the SmartyPup Day Camp Novice Trainer position, you will participate in our comprehensive Novice Puppy Training and Management Program. This program is designed to equip you with the fundamental skills and knowledge required for puppy managing and training puppies. Throughout the training program, you will receive hands-on training and theoretical education, focusing on:
- Puppy Behavior and Training: Understanding and addressing various behavioral and training issues in puppies to promote healthy development.
- Applied Learning Theory: Utilizing scientifically proven methods to train and manage puppies effectively.
Upon successful completion of the 3 to 12 month training program, you will earn the title of SmartyPup Novice Puppy Handler. This certification signifies your foundational knowledge in puppy behavior therapy and applied learning theory, opening doors to a fulfilling career in the dog training industry.
**Qualifications**:
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with puppy owners
- Ability to work with puppies of different sizes, personalities, and energy levels, providing a nurturing and engaging environment
- Calm under pressure and maintain composure in stressful or emergency situations
- Diligent in following all safety protocols
- Commitment to keeping the environment clean and sanitary
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and stay on your feet throughout the shift
**Preferred Experience**:
- Experience working in the restaurant industry or in childcare
- Experience raising a puppy as an adult
- Experience working with puppies and dogs under 2 years old
- Volunteering at a humane society as a dog walker or kennel attendant
- Ability to interact with several people at one time
