Puppy Counselor Role at Top Dog SF
Top Dog SF stands as a premier establishment in the Bay Area, renowned for its professional dog training and walking services. Our approach is rooted in modern, scientifically-backed methods that prioritize positive reinforcement. As a locally owned and operated business, we are dedicated to nurturing our team members, fostering internal growth, and continuously enhancing our offerings.
Since our inception, we have been committed to providing exceptional pet care, focusing on both the exercise and training of dogs while equipping owners with the knowledge to cultivate well-adjusted urban companions.
We are excited to announce an opening for a Puppy Counselor within our innovative Puppy Head Start Program. This program is designed to facilitate early learning of essential skills for puppies aged 2-4 months, laying the groundwork for their overall development. Our curriculum emphasizes foundational training and the establishment of social and play skills, preparing puppies for life in various environments.
This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals eager to deepen their understanding of animal behavior, development, and training. While prior experience with dogs is beneficial, it is not a prerequisite, as comprehensive training will be provided. This role is particularly suited for those embarking on a career in the expanding pet care sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage with clients and their puppies in the Puppy Head Start Program from Monday to Friday, 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, with approximately 40 hours of work per week.
- Exhibit patience, empathy, and awareness throughout daily interactions.
- Remain active and attentive, as much of the role involves being on your feet with puppies.
- Receive hands-on training in puppy socialization, understanding dog body language, reinforcing positive play behaviors, effective communication with dogs, and basic learning principles.
- Prior dog experience is advantageous but not essential; we are eager to train the right candidate.
Essential Duties:
- Ensure a safe and enriching environment for puppies, facilitating critical early development.
- Assist in training puppies according to established plans, collaborating with certified trainers to provide enrichment and desensitization activities.
- Maintain cleanliness by promptly addressing any messes created by the puppies.
- Prepare and organize the space before and after sessions, including cleaning and disinfecting areas, preparing snacks, and managing laundry.
- Handle light kitchen tasks, such as preparing dog treats.
- Support trainers with various assigned tasks.
- Contribute to social media efforts by capturing content.
- Collaborate with trainers to complete daily and weekly puppy progress reports, documenting training needs and issues.
- Assist with special events, orientations, and marketing initiatives, which may require occasional weekend hours.
Qualifications:
Availability from Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, with some flexibility for weekend or evening work. The role demands physical stamina, including standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic and sometimes noisy environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong multitasking capabilities, able to adapt to the changing needs of puppies.
- Exposure to various substances related to pet care is expected.
- Previous customer service experience and effective communication skills in English are required.
- Comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively.
- Demonstrated patience and empathy when working with puppies in a group setting.
- Flexibility to take on additional tasks as needed.
- A valid Class C California Driver's License may be required for occasional driving tasks.
- References from previous supervisors are necessary.
