**ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Incumbent serves as a Sergeant for the Authority’s Office of Public Safety with responsibility for instructing and assisting officers in the proper performance of their duties;
- Responsible for the preparation of roll call and insuring that officers are attentive to the reading of orders, dispatches and complaints. Directs officers to proceed by the nearest route to their assignments and, unless otherwise directed by an official, leave immediately and maintain a constant patrol of their assigned area. Assists in the inspection of officers at the completion of roll call;
- Maintains a record of the names of officers who have been given warrants, subpoenas, notices and official papers for services or attention;
- Responds as often as practicable during each tour of duty to calls for police service; insures that the proper police action is taken;
- Responsible for the proper conduct and appearance of subordinates; (deemed guilty of neglect of duty and inefficiency when assigned officers are habitually late and indifferent in the performance of duties);
- Reviews all reports submitted by officers for accuracy and completeness;
- Insures that all posts are covered as appropriate. In the event an officer cannot be located on his/her beat or post, arranges to have the beat or post covered. Institutes an immediate investigation as to the cause of the officer’s absence;
- Complies with Authority directives; notes and promptly reports any misconduct or violation of the rules and regulations on the part of subordinates;
- Insures that all assignments and those of subordinate officers are completed, or properly transferred or suspended before being relieved of duty. Insures that all subordinate officers are properly relieved and accounted for at the completion of the tour of duty;
- Monitors and reports on the field performance of Authority building monitors and private security personnel contracted with the Authority to insure compliance with laws, regulations, policies and procedures; conducts weekly in-service training for Authority police/security personnel;
- Assists the shift commander in the conduct of investigations regarding complaints generated by residents and staff regarding public safety issues;
- Maintains a professional decorum and attitude in all dealings with residents, staff, visitors and superiors; conducts personal life in a manner that sets a positive example;
- Maintains liaison with all law enforcement offices and related agencies to exchange information and facilitate cooperative efforts;
- Provides any services necessary to further the mission and objectives of the Authority that are not restricted by legal or police department policy;
- In the absence of the lieutenant/ shift commander, assumes all authority, duties and responsibilities of the position;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Job Requirements**

**EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in public safety or other related field; and at least five years’ related experience, and at least two year's of supervisory experience, preferably in public housing environment; or other equivalent combination of education and experience which meets the minimum qualifications requirement may be substituted.

Due to field responsibility, the incumbent must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s permit and be able to meet DCHA requirements to be placed on DCHA’s approved driving list, within 30 days of the date of appointment to this position._**
