**DUTIES**:
**This is an intermittent temporary position in the USCG Academy’s Coastal Sail Training Program (CSTP) reinforcing 2/c cadets’ (rising Juniors) leadership objectives and providing the experiential learning opportunity to practice leadership skills in a peer-to-peer environment. The incumbent will be assigned to teach, coach, and mentor the 2/c cadets in developing their leadership, seamanship, and navigation skills during a two-week long (9-days underway) sortie in southern New England waters aboard the CGA Leadership44 sloops. The vessels travel in a squadron of four identical sailboats, pulling into a new port each night. The distance between ports is approximately 40nm.**

**As a core course for the USCG Academy’s Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership, the Coastal Sail Training Program emphasizes the core competencies of Teambuilding and Technical Credibility.**

**Cadets are expected to**:

- ** Develop Technical Credibility in basic sailing, seamanship, meteorology, situational awareness in the maritime environment and small boat operations, while fostering a “liking for the sea and its lore,” including knowledge of safety-at-sea procedures.**:

- ** Develop basic proficiency in navigation, particularly coastal piloting using paper charts (i.e., without the aid of a gyrocompass or electronic navigation) in areas that present navigational challenges. This will include training the cadets’ “seaman’s eye” in correlating charts to the visual presentation of the waterway.**:

- ** Expand their working knowledge of Coast Guard Cutter-like afloat operations (watch standing, logistics, preventative maintenance, teamwork, administration, operating parameters, risk assessment, etc.).**:

- ** Invest in individual and team growth in leadership and character development through experiential learning.**:

- ** Represent the Academy well to the boating public.**

**Qualification Requirements**:
**Minimum**:
1. 4-year college degree

2. Professional Instructor-level sailing, seamanship, and navigational knowledge (using paper charts and

electronic navigation devices).

3. Professional mariner’s knowledge of the COLREG’s Rules of the Road for near-coastal operation of a ~44’

sailing vessel (vessel less than 12m).

4. Familiarity with the proper use of marine electronics and their operation including AIS, radar, and VHF

radios.

5. Center-console motorboat operation.

6. 3-5 years of professional sail training experience.

7. Current First Aid and CPR

**Preferred (in addition to the minimum)**:
1. Familiarity with the Coast Guard’s Core leadership competencies for Leading Self, Leading Others, and

Leading Performance and Change.

2. Familiarity and use of the Coast Guard Academy’s Leadership Development Program, including leadership

and teambuilding models used in this program (ie LEAD strategy, Tuckman’s Stages of Team

Development, DiSC behavioral models, etc.).

3. Assessing cadets on their ability to demonstrate behaviors associated with the Coast Guard Core

leadership competencies.

4. Familiarity with operating a ~44’ sailboats, with 9’ draft, in and around the ports and waterways of southern

New England (Long Island Sound, Fisher’s Island Sound, Block Island Sound, Narragansett Bay, RI

Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound).

5. Prior qualification as an OIC in CSTP, or all of the following:
a. US Sailing Cruising Instructor or Bareboat Cruising Instructor certifications, or equivalent.

b. Current USCG 25 ton Near-Coastal Mariner’s license, or greater.

c. CT (or other state’s) Safe Boating certification.

**OTHER ESSENTIAL INFORMATION**:

- Selectee will be required to participate in Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer as the Standard method of payment for payroll and travel purposes.
- Males born after 12/31/59 and at least 18 years of age must be registered with the Selective Service System, unless covered by an exemption under the Selective Service Law, in accordance with 5 U.S. Code 3378. Selectee will be required to provide a written statement regarding his registration status unless he is exempted by this statute.
- Must satisfactorily complete a Federal Background check.
