JOB SUMMARY

The Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning (CETL) serves as a hub for advancing teaching and learning practices within the University of Connecticut. Its core work revolves around support, resources, and professional development opportunities for academic units (departments, programs) and individuals (faculty, adjuncts, graduate teaching assistants, staff) to enhance the quality of our academic programs and teaching to improve student learning outcomes. CETL will engage in the following core functions.

  • Professional Development: Offering workshops, seminars, and training session on pedagogical techniques, instructional design, assessment methods, and technology integration to help faculty continuously develop their teaching skills and innovate in their classrooms.
  • Consultative Services: Providing support and consultations to faculty and academic units seeking guidance on course design, curriculum development, instructional strategies, assessment techniques, and addressing teaching challenges.
  • Technology Integration: Supporting faculty in the effective use of educational technologies and digital tools to enhance teaching, engage students, facilitate active learning, and promote accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Assist programs and faculty in designing assessments, evaluating student learning outcomes, and implementing evidence-based practices for continuous improvement.
  • Evidence-Based Practices: Dissemination of best practices and fostering a culture of scholarly inquiry into pedagogical approaches and educational outcomes.

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) is a key leadership position within the Provost's Office that supports the university's teaching and learning mission across the university. The incumbent is responsible for enhancing and optimizing teaching and learning experiences by providing vision, strategic direction, and operational oversight for initiatives aimed at enhancing teaching, learning, technology integration, and student learning outcome assessment across all disciplines.

The Director will collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and implement programs, resources, and services that promote effective pedagogical practices and curriculum design, foster inclusive learning environments, and support faculty development and student success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership, vision, and influence to elevate teaching and learning innovation and excellence.
  • Communicate CETL's vision and goals to university stakeholders, including faculty and senior administrators.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for CETL in alignment with institutional goals and priorities.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for CETL staff and units, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Collaborate with academic departments and faculty to identify and address teaching and learning needs, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Design, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate professional development programs, workshops, and seminars to enhance teaching effectiveness and promote innovative instructional methods.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of instructional design strategies that align with best practices in curriculum development and course design.
  • Oversee the design, development, and dissemination of resources to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Foster a culture of inclusive teaching and learning by providing resources instructors can use to support the university's diverse student population.
  • Oversee the assessment and evaluation of program-level effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and CETL programs and services.
  • Promote the use of technology and digital resources to enhance course content, accessibility, and engagement.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of instruction-related technology solutions, technology integration, and digital resources to support teaching and learning and enhance course content.
  • Serve as a liaison between CETL and other university units, committees, and stakeholders to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and communication.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, and best practices in teaching and learning, and disseminate relevant information to the university community.
  • Manage CETL's budget, resources, and facilities effectively and responsibly.
  • Represent CETL and participate in relevant university committees, conferences, and professional organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Instructional Design, or a related field.
  2. Minimum of three years of experience in a leadership role in higher education, with demonstrated leadership in teaching and learning support programs or faculty development initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral degree in Education, Educational Technology, or a related field.Certification in instructional design, educational technology, or related areas.Demonstrated success in securing external funding and grants for teaching and learning initiatives.Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.Active involvement in relevant professional associations and networks.Experience as a faculty member or instructor in higher education.Strong understanding of pedagogical theories, instructional design principles, and assessment strategies.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff, and university leaders.Demonstrated experiences with a variety of instructional design strategies and technologies.Experience with learning management systems, educational technology tools, and online/hybrid course delivery.Knowledge of accessibility standards and universal design principles for teaching and learning materials.Experience with faculty mentoring, peer observation, and/or teaching portfolio development.
