The Office of School and Community Engagement (OSCE) at Penn GSE connects Philadelphia students and families, educators, school leaders, and community organizations with the expertise and resources of the Penn Graduate School of Education. Through a responsive partnership model, the OSCE works to promote equitable access to high-quality teaching, learning, and leadership while prioritizing social justice and the needs of traditionally underserved groups. Models and resources developed via these partnerships support the improved educational, professional, and social-emotional outcomes of all members of Philadelphia school communities

The Associate Director, Teaching and Learning oversees the creation, implementation, and assessment of the Office's interdisciplinary pre- and in-service practitioner development programs and services. These in-person and virtual resources include individual or limited-run workshop series as well as long-term K-16+ partnerships, curricular and professional development materials, and individual and group coaching and community-building. Working in direct support of the Office's mission and vision, the Associate Director, Teaching and Learning will ensure that these resources are accessible, evidence-based, and iterated in response to the needs of the wide range of audiences the Office serves including, but not limited to, pre- and in-service K-12 educators, school counselors, climate and culture staff, and school volunteers.

This position is contingent upon grant funding until June 30, 2029.

Job Description

Responsibilities

Serve on the senior leadership team of a major multi-year, grant-funded project start-up, tasked with actively engaging with a core partner to build a new program supporting high school student success in two sites in Philadelphia.
  • Develop criteria for selecting partner schools by researching SDP data and creating evaluative tools based on the criteria.
  • Co-design and recommend research- and evidence-based practices and instructions to address the specific needs of the students assigned to the selected school(s).
  • Do-develop means to assess students' readiness to participate in the project, analyzing school and student data to inform the process.
  • Engage with non-profit partner and project stakeholders (including teachers, parents, administrators, and community members) to elicit, review, and respond to needs, concerns, and expectations in the design of the project.
  • Co-plan with school social worker(s) professional development offerings on best practices and strategies for implementing social services to improve students' academic and behavioral outcomes and improve their social and emotional engagement with other students and adults.
  • Support non-profit partner in identifying gaps in curricula and other programmatic elements, and where needed, recommend different or additional resources.
  • Design and develop services in collaboration with the identified school(s)' existing social work services to support students who are facing social, emotional/mental health issues.
  • Establish position descriptions and requirements for school social workers and assist with the recruitment process.
  • Manage individuals and teams working in support of the above project, ensuring effective role enactment and functional collaboration is occurring in support of program goals and timelines
  • Lead collaboration efforts with school staff to on-board social workers at the school site(s).
  • Collaborate with the school(s) to identify a process for students to schedule private sessions, and a location in the school that maintains privacy for each session.
  • Identify and collaborate with a subject-matter-expert (SME) to plan training sessions for program teachers, based on teachers' and school administrators' feedback.
  • Collaborate to enact training sessions for project stakeholders (i.e. in-school teachers, school administrators, etc).
  • Provide ongoing support in identifying gaps in curricula and other programmatic elements, and where needed, recommend different or additional resources. Lead collaboration efforts between school staff and social worker(s) to ensure services are implemented in support of students facing social, emotional/mental health issues.
  • Support ongoing team-building and communication among the school-based and school administrators, teachers, parents, and community members, and afterschool professionals. Provide training sessions with subject-matter-experts (SMEs) for program teachers, based on teachers' and school administrators' feedback.
  • Support research conducted by external partner to assess progress toward project goals and evaluation metrics.

Supervise ongoing work to analyze the findings of a year-long, award-winning educator mental health program at multiple Philadelphia school sites, and devise a plan for its continuation and/or expansion in the academic year by securing additional funding and/or additional financially invested partners.

Manage collaboration with a portfolio of current partners within GSE, across the University, and between Penn GSE and K-12 schools; use deep knowledge of instructional design methodologies, evidence-based teaching and learning and professional wellness practices, and the needs and preferences of adult learners to create, implement, and assess the effectiveness of templates, tools and resources, exemplars, and training sessions for pre- and in-service helping professionals. As part of this, maintain and expand the Office's working directory of helping professionals, the Alliance for Interprofessional Education, as a resource for the ongoing needs of OSCE projects.

Research and submit applications materials for grants, awards, and other means to financially sustain the Teaching & Learning efforts of the OSCE and Penn GSE.

Communicate with all stakeholders to ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget; Solicit and engage potential collaborations with new partners, and conduct needs assessments and intake with to design a plan to provide services, resource-matching, and/or other support as needed.

Maintain up-to-date, in-depth knowledge of best and emerging practices in online teaching and continuing and professional education and presenting on best and emerging practices to internal and external audiences.

Write and edit educational content and resources, including the OSCE professional wellness newsletter, Roots and Branches as manage the OSCE social media presence.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL:
  • A Master's Degree in an education-related field and 2-3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven ability to create instructional materials for educators and other professionals across disciplines connected to K-12 education and higher education
  • Proven ability to facilitate compelling, impactful, and learner-centered educational experiences, both in-person and in virtual settings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Ability to take initiative and lead projects
  • Creativity in approach to the work
  • Track record of creating connections with diverse communities

PREFERRED:
  • Level II Instructional Certificate
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a K-12 educator in urban public schools
