Department Summary

A wide range of student- and faculty-centered services are the cornerstone of the Libraries' integral role in the University of North Texas community. As the most-used service on campus and an essential component of education and research at the University of North Texas, the Libraries offer access to an abundant collection of more than 6 million items (print and digital) along with expert personnel to assist patrons in achieving their academic and scholarly goals. We provide innovative programs and support to enhance the intermingling of teaching, learning, and research at UNT.

The Cataloging and Metadata Services Department at the University of North Texas Library is seeking to hire a Cataloging Librarian to work collaboratively with department, division, and other library personnel to perform original and complex cataloging of materials, with an emphasis on electronic resources.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The Cataloging Librarian will report to the Department Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services (CMS) and will be responsible for catalog records and related data resources in a variety of languages, subjects, and formats, with an emphasis on electronic resources. The librarian will work collaboratively within the CMS department to maintain a comprehensive and precise catalog of holdings for the UNT Libraries, assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for bibliographic and authority control, and facilitate planning and process improvements. The librarian is expected to perform original and complex copy cataloging by providing full and accurate resource description and subject analysis according to international and local standards. The Cataloging Librarian will also work collaboratively with the Library's other departments and divisions.
UNT librarians hold fixed duration Professional Faculty status, and are expected to participate in scholarly, professional, and service activities that enhance their departmental responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities:
• Perform original and complex copy cataloging of library resources in various formats and languages with an emphasis on electronic resources.
• Download, edit, and load vendor-supplied bibliographic record files using MarcEdit, III Sierra, and other tools, ensuring compliance with current cataloging standards and practices.
• Perform name, title, and subject authority work, and contribute new or updated authority records to the LC/NACO Authority File.
• Participate in cooperative metadata endeavors, such as OCLC and NACO.
• Proactively evaluate workflows to improve automation, quality, and efficiency of work, and participate in the development of departmental goals, policies, procedures, and priorities.
• Participate in the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff, students, and interns.
• Manage projects with respect to deadlines, prioritization, and completion.
• Prepare administrative and statistical reports, as assigned.
• Cooperate with Collection Development and Collection Assessment units to improve cross-division workflows.
• Work collaboratively with other units across the Libraries.
• Provide training, consultation, and documentation about cataloging, metadata, authority control, and other topics to relevant staff across the Libraries.
• Keep abreast of current and developing standards, practices, and policies for cataloging and metadata, and disseminate information to colleagues as appropriate.

Salary and Rank:
Librarian rank will be determined by the Library Personnel Affairs Committee through review of the selected candidate's education, experience, scholarly and professional involvement, and service.

Minimum Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:
• ALA-accredited Master's Degree, or equivalent.
• Strong working knowledge of metadata standards and best practices, specifically RDA and MARC.
• Familiarity with cataloging tools. (For example: OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, ClassWeb Plus, RDA Toolkit)
• Familiarity with complex copy and original cataloging.
• Familiarity with an integrated library system.
• Familiarity with current issues and principles regarding cataloging.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent organizational skills, and ability to work in dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Ability to build effective work relationships.

• Familiarity with OCLC Connexion.
• Familiarity with MarcEdit.
