The Opportunity

If you’re looking to be part of an innovative company that values collaboration, flexibility, innovation and inclusion, and a team that works hard and loves what they do, you’ve just found your next role.

As the Communications Consultant, Media Relations, you will help to tell MassMutual’s story externally, communicating the company’s compelling and differentiated business, culture and purpose since our founding in 1851: to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love.

You are a motivated Public Relations / Media Relations professional who will contribute to the development and execution of communications plans to help promote, enhance and protect the company brand and reputation.

This role, which reports to the Head of Media Relations, will provide media relations support to the company’s operations, legal and risk areas, and will also be responsible for leading a LinkedIn Leadership effort for the media relations team.

The Team

As a member of MassMutual’s Strategic Communications team, you’ll work closely with leaders and communications partners across the company to develop and execute media relations strategies and secure opportunities that support the company’s purpose, strategic priorities, key initiatives and offerings, tell MassMutual’s compelling and differentiated story and ultimately drive awareness of the company.

The media relations team is a collaborative group that works to identify unique stories and notable announcements and milestones from within the company and share them externally through media opportunities. This close-knit team is creative, inclusive and continuously learning and adapting to new developments and ways of communicating.

  • Provide media relations support to the company’s Operations, Legal and Risk areas, proactively identifying external earned media opportunities and reactively responding to media requests.
  • Serve as the department’s lead on issues management.
  • Lead the department’s LinkedIn Leadership effort, which provides LinkedIn support to select differentiated leaders within the company (excluding the CEO, but in collaboration with those efforts) and may also identify high-profile speaking and award opportunities for select leaders. Manage outside agency and maximize their support, streamlining communications between the team and agency, growing and developing the program, building up the in-house media relations team’s knowledge and support capabilities and establishing KPIs to track and measure the program’s impact.
  • Exercise excellent judgment in prioritizing workload, focusing on those efforts that are most strategic and impactful for the company.

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of Public Relations / Media Relations and/or Thought Leadership experience, with prior in-house experience.
  • 8+ years of writing, editing and media relations skills – from development of strategic messaging, to writing press releases, to pitching unique storylines, to media training executives.

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Prior Public Relations / Media Relations experience, including demonstrated ability to work with media to secure editorial / earned media coverage.
  • Strong prior issues management / reputation management experience supporting a large company, including serving as a company spokesperson.
  • Prior experience providing Thought Leadership support and/or successfully establishing an in-house LinkedIn program for select leaders.
  • Excellent media relationships (regional, national, trade, digital) and knowledge.
  • Demonstrated agility and flexibility and a continuous learning mindset, with willingness and desire to develop and work on new areas or special projects as needed.

What to Expect as Part of MassMutual and the Team

  • Regular meetings with the media relations team
  • Focused one-on-one meetings with your manager
  • Access to mentorship opportunities
  • Networking opportunities including access to Asian, Hispanic/Latinx, African American, women, LGBTQ, veteran and disability-focused Business Resource Groups
