Philadelphia PA United States University of Pennsylvania Full time

Research Associate in Genetic Epidemiology

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: May 19, 2023
Deadline: May 19, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise is required in the specific area of genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, human genetics, and/or bioinformatics, and will have a strong academic record with first-author publications (published or in press) including genomic studies; publications in the area of neurodegeneration genetics are ideal but not a requirement. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

Responsibilities may include data management, analysis, development, and/or implementation of novel analytical strategies and bioinformatics tools for analysis of this data, the implementation of complex pipelines, and interpretation and presentation of analysis results at internal, consortium-wide, and national and international scientific meetings. This position will provide multiple opportunities for scholarship, the development of novel projects, and submission and collaboration on proposals including applications for career development and research grants.

The successful applicant will have an opportunity to collaborate closely with researchers across the Alzheimer's Disease Genetics Consortium (ADGC), Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP), Genome Center for Alzheimer's Disease (GCAD), Collaborative for Alzheimer's Disease Research (CADRE), and NIA Genetics of Alzheimer's Disease Data Storage Site (NIAGADS), and they will receive additional mentorship from faculty members across the Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center (PNGC) from Pathology (Gerard Schellenberg, Alessandra Chesi), Genetics (Struan Grant), Biostatistics and Epidemiology (Mingyao Li), and the Institute for Biomedical Informatics (Li-San Wang, Yuk Yee Fanny Leung) at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania.

The Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics is home to more than 100 faculty and graduate education programs in these three core disciplines. Most faculty are also a member of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental program that links clinical epidemiology and biostatistics within the Perelman School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania Health System (i.e., Penn Medicine), and the Penn community.

The Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center (PNGC) is a multidisciplinary group studying the genetics of Alzheimer's Disease and other related dementia. Our researchers apply high-throughput genotyping and sequencing technologies to analyze tens of thousands of genomes and find novel genes. New experimental approaches, algorithms, and databases are developed to translate these findings into biological knowledge about the disease and new directions for drug discovery and preventive strategies.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
