Location:
Kennett Square, PA
Open Date:

Description:

The Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in large animal reproduction, with a focus on equine reproduction. The position will be in the Associated Faculty in the Academic Clinician (AC) track, which focuses on clinical service and teaching. A typical division of effort for faculty in the AC track at New Bolton Center is 90% time on clinics, including clinical service and clinical teaching, and 10% time off clinics for academic efforts. Didactic and laboratory teaching and administrative or other service duties are included in both on- and off-clinic time.

PLEASE NOTE: a single position in large animal reproduction will be filled, but applications are also being accepted for the position in our Clinician-Educator track, which carries with it assigned time and expectations for research. Please see position number: for further details on the position as Clinician Educator.

The successful candidate is expected to enhance the clinical, teaching, and research missions of the Section of Reproduction and Behavior and the Hofmann Center for Animal Reproduction. New Bolton Center (NBC) is home to five Diplomates of the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT), one Board-certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, who is also an Honorary Member of the ACT, and two residents in training for ACT board-certification. The Hofmann Center accommodates an active in-house clinical reproduction practice supported by advanced technologies in mare reproductive diagnosis, treatment, and management; stallion breeding soundness evaluation and breeding management; embryo transfer; transvaginal follicle aspiration for oocyte recovery; and stallion and mare behavior evaluation and therapy. In addition, Section members provide reproductive services at NBC Hospital for Large Animals, including management of healthy and high-risk pregnancy cases. Section members partner with the Neonatal Intensive Care and the Emergency and Critical Care Services of the Hospital to oversee reproductive emergency cases. Additional clinical opportunities include on-farm equine reproductive management for breeding centers in the service area.

The internationally renowned New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals enjoys one of the highest caseloads among peer institutions, admitting almost 7000 patients in 2023. The Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center is home to over 40 diplomates of American and European specialty colleges who are in direct support of the program, including 10 double-boarded individuals. The 26 Clinician-Educators and 10 Tenure-track faculty perform the majority of the Department's research, along with post-residency graduate students enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania's Biomedical Graduate Studies program through funding by New Bolton Center's Penn Veterinary Scientist Training program and post-doctoral trainees, fellows and visiting scholars. Students enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine are highly qualified, motivated, and eager to learn.

New Bolton Center is located on 700 rolling acres of beautiful pastoral land in Kennett Square , Chester County , Pennsylvania in close proximity to Philadelphia and major metropolitan and cultural centers. The successful candidate has the potential to access the clinical, teaching and research units on the New Bolton Center Campus , including the Veterinary School's 200-cow Marshak Dairy and the 250-sow Penn Swine Teaching & Research Center , the Center for Stewardship Agriculture and Food Security , Pathobiology , Wildlife Futures , and core laboratories working on microbial genomics, stem cell biology, orthopedic disease, and germ cell biology. Opportunities also exist for interaction and collaboration with numerous departments and centers in Philadelphia's lively University District. The three other departments of Penn Vet are located at the center of this highly interactive biomedical research environment, in close proximity to the Perelman School of Medicine , the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia , Penn Dental Medicine , The Wistar Institute , and a vast array of core facilities.

Qualifications:
