Job Description: The Annual Fund Leadership Gifts Officer is part of a team responsible for raising annual support for Washington and Lee University's operating budget. The primary responsibility of this position is maximizing leadership level giving for the purpose of increasing philanthropic financial support and strong participation for Washington and Lee's annual fund. The Gift Officer's fundraising contributions are critical to meeting the annual fund's ambitious goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Works to acquire, renew, and upgrade leadership level annual giving donors through individual cultivation and solicitation. Travel will extend to areas where there is the greatest concentration of prospects. The role is focused on soliciting those with capacity to give at The President's Society (TPS) level on an annual basis (levels are adjusted for Young Alumni beginning with the first-year post-graduation).
  • Coordinates with the Director of Annual Giving on the communication strategy for TPS renewals and prospects and assists in creating content for TPS-focused communications.
  • Coordinates with the Director of Regional Leadership Giving to gain knowledge of closing multi-year commitments, using leadership annual fund giving opportunities as a litmus test for future major gifts, maximizing travel time to meet with the strongest prospects, and building longer-term strategies that look further ahead than the current fiscal year.
  • Completes 140 meaningful and strategic donor visits each fiscal year. Throughout the year, attends a number of solicitation meetings with various leadership giving officers in order to development relationships and meet contacts. These meetings can occur on campus, locally in Virginia or by coordinating travel calendars.
  • During non-travel weeks, the candidate will plan and execute an average of 16 virtual solicitations per week. The solicitations will encompass a combination of direct mail, email and phone calls that create highly personalized experiences for each leadership giving prospect.
  • Reports on progress of gifts through the Raiser's Edge database. Identify gaps and opportunities in the unrestricted giving pyramid including Young Alumni who may not otherwise receive the attention that they warrant.
  • Organizes end of calendar year (December) and end of fiscal year (June) Annual Fund outreach plan with the overall Development staff.
  • Works collaboratively with members of the Annual Giving team to maximize opportunity through non-Reunion and Reunion classes and associated volunteers.
  • As time allows, stewards leadership donors and volunteers while maintaining a primary focus on soliciting and closing new annual fund commitments.
  • Participates and staffs University Advancement events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of successful fundraising experience, preferably in a higher education or non-profit setting or a combination of education and experience from which a similar skillset would be achieved.
  • High levels of energy, motivation and determination required. Must possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to listen effectively, and outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be organized, able to work collaboratively and strategically, and be a talented motivator of volunteers.
  • Knowledge of Moves Management principles and donor database systems is beneficial.
  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan is essential.
  • Must have the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the details.
  • Expected to have strong character and leadership abilities and excellent human relations skills to represent the university effectively with its alumni and other external constituents.
  • A record of reaching ambitious targets and goals is expected. Experience with publications and development marketing communications is highly desirable.
