ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent performs similar work as the need arises.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group.
  • Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Reads and understands blueprints and assembly drawings.
  • Working knowledge of shipboard machinery (i.e. valves and actuators, variety of pumps, gears and gear boxes, winches, heat exchangers, bearings and shafting, rudder systems, field machining) pertaining to machine shop repairs.
  • Understand and demonstrate the use of all standard shop measuring tools: Micrometers inside, outside, and depth, Vernier scales and/or dial calipers, Rulers and tape measures, Indicators, Protractors, Vernier, linear, Firm joint and spring joint calipers inside and outside, Height gauges, Pi tapes, and Advanced ability in the use hand tools (i.e. files and types of files, hacksaws, wrenches, port-a powers, taps and dies).
  • Attention to detail: Must accurately measure machine parts to within .001".

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED preferred. 5-10 years relevant work experience. Proven skills, and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.

Journey Level Support
Demonstrated proficiency in 1 of the support groupings and knowledge of a core/main ship repair area (1 certification or equivalent) OR demonstrated proficiency of 2 support services areas. Requires some supervision to perform more complex jobs/tasks, but is able to perform majority of job duties independently, with minimal supervision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works indoors: Continually- works in a warehouse machine shop setting that is heated but not air conditioned.
  • Works outdoors: Occasionally- walks to and on-board ship.
  • Safety equipment required: Hard hat, eye and ear protection, respirator, no loose clothing, must wear leather shoes/work boots.
  • Other Exposures: May be exposed to acids, de-greasing cleaners, paints, solvents, oil, grease, liquid steel/putty, oil vapors, petroleum, caustics, fumes, noise, raw sewage, and asbestos.
  • Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses hand and power tools, wrenches, hoists, machine tooling equipment such as boring, grinding, tapping, lathe, and drilling equipment. Uses micrometers/dial indicators and other measuring instruments. Chainfalls, knee mills, radial arm drill press, upright drill press, overhead cranes (pendant controlled), portable machining equipment, come-a-longs, port-a-power, cut off saws.
