Land Systems: Functional Manager (Mechanical Engineering)
Rapidly growing Saab Inc. Land Systems division is seeking a dynamic Mechanical Engineering Manager with experience in weapon systems engineering design, production support, and functional discipline team management.

The primary function of the role is to provide engineering functional management of the team of 5 or more mechanical engineers, some working remotely. The Mechanical Engineering Manager will collaborate with program management teams, division's chief engineer, human resources and other functions to support new developments, execution of existing programs, and technology transfers, as well as to assist with Land Systems' engineering organization growth and engineering alignment with the future business development.

Travel is required, mainly domestic and some international. Currently, the position is remote; relocation will be required to Detroit, MI area within 2025.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Provide functional management to mechanical engineering team, with focus on meeting technical and programmatic objectives.
  2. Assign appropriate personnel to projects and programs; recruit staff as necessary to meet business demands, through both direct hire and contractual agencies.
  3. Provide leadership oversight, technical insight, guidance, mentorship, and coaching to mechanical engineering personnel in the performance of their tasks.
  4. Manage performance review and career development processes and conduct cyclical compensation reviews.
  5. Develop engineering training and professional development opportunities and execution strategies.
  6. Ensure personnel adherence to established company processes and procedures, provide feedback and actively contribute to development and updates to processes, forms, operating procedures, and templates.
  7. Support cost estimating activities, including proposals, IRAD, capital, and overhead budget developments.
  8. Ensure accountability for creation of accurate technical, cost and schedule targets.
  9. Help to assess technical risks and identify risk mitigation strategies within mechanical engineering and adjacent disciplines.
  10. Actively assist Land Systems leadership team in long-term engineering staffing planning and strategy development, including establishment of engineering home location, labs, and facilities.
  11. Contribute to Land Systems' technology development roadmap planning from mechanical engineering perspective.
  12. Generate budgets and requests for mechanical engineering function group, including overhead, capital, software, tools, subscriptions, and training.
  13. Together with Land Systems engineering leadership, assist other divisions' efforts with mechanical engineering staffing needs.

Compensation Range: $146,800-$190,800

The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.

Skills and Experience:
  1. Minimum Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and 15 years of experience in related field, or equivalent combination of advanced degree and experience.
  2. Hands-on, direct experience in mechanical engineering execution and management, related to product development, production and sustainment in DoD sector.
  3. Working, hands-on experience with matrix functional organization, including recruiting, hiring, performance reviews, career development processes and other staffing efforts.
  4. Excellent leadership and communication skills across the function, as well as with leadership teams, peers, subordinates, and business partners, domestically and internationally, in-person and remotely.
  5. Working experience with DoD and industry engineering processes, procedures, standards, requirements, tools, and practices.
  6. Experience and familiarity with other company functions operations, such as human resources, finance, supply chain, and other engineering functions.
  7. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain DoD clearance (Secret minimum, existing clearance a plus).
  8. International and domestic travel is required, up to 30%.
