Description of the Position:
The Peer Substance Coaching program is designed to assist students in quitting or cutting back their use of alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs. Peer Substance Coaches are student employees of the Wellness Center who will support fellow students through ongoing one-on-one relationships. The coaches use motivational interviewing, stages of change, and SMART recovery concepts to work with the peer to encourage them along their substance use recovery journey. The pairs will meet as often as needed to keep up the personalized motivation for the student's substance use goals. This program is a non-clinical option for students who are in recovery from substance abuse disorder or want to change their substance use habits.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Peer Substance Coaches have many important roles and responsibilities within the Wellness Center. The following describes the most common position responsibilities:
•Training and Research- Coaches commit to the continued training process and will research continued topics based on the needs of the peer they are partnered with. Coaches will attend the 2 opening training sessions (the 2-hour opening presentation and the 1-hour practice session) as well as complete the online training via Google Classroom. Coaches will attend monthly 2-hour ongoing training sessions.
•Peer Coaching- Coaches and their peers will decide how often and how to meet (weekly, biweekly, or monthly). The weekly hours for this position will vary widely depending on the nature of the relationship created. Coaches will maintain the privacy of peers and use trauma-informed care and culturally appropriate practices.
•Role Modeling- Peer Substance Coaches serve as mentors and teachers in the community. As such, Coaches are expected to abide by all College policies and make healthy and informed decisions.
•Communication- Coaches will communicate with peers and supervisors in a professional and timely manner.
In general, Peer Substance Coaches work approximately 5 hours per week for the Wellness Center including paid training.
•Research- Research and outside preparation will be completed on a continual basis as new information and studies are published, about an hour per week.
•Meetings with the Peer- 2-8 hours per month, 1-2 hours per week - depending on the needs of the peer and the schedule decided between the coach and peer. It's possible that a coach won't be assigned a peer.
•Office Hours- Coaches are typically scheduled to work two one-hour office shifts a week.
•Weekly Meeting- Coaches are expected to attend the weekly staff meeting on Thursdays from 11 am-12:30 pm.
•Bonding- Mandatory team bonding events happen 3-4 times a semester and help to create positive team relationships.
In order to effectively do the job, Peer Substance Coaches are given ample training to ensure they feel confident and equipped to be a resource and mentor on campus. It is expected that Coaches attend all training listed below as part of their employment with the Wellness Center. Coaches should not have any other work-related or co-curricular responsibilities during these dates/times. All training listed below are paid for:
o Meet Current Wellness Center Team: one day during community time in late Spring pm
o Summer Asynchronous Training (10 hours)
o New Student Orientation & Fall Training: Approximately one week before new students arrive. 40-50 hours of Mandatory training 9-5:00
o Mental Health First Aid: TBD after hire

Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills)
Core competencies for peer coaches reflect certain foundational principles identified by members of the mental health consumer and substance use disorder recovery communities. These are:
•Recovery-oriented: Peer workers hold out hope to those they serve, partnering with them to envision and achieve a meaningful and purposeful life. Peer workers help those they serve to identify and build on strengths and empower them to choose for themselves, recognizing that there are multiple pathways to recovery.
•Person-centered: Peer recovery support services are always directed by the person participating in services. Peer recovery support is personalized to align with the specific hopes, goals, and preferences of the people served and to respond to specific needs the people have identified with the peer worker.
•Voluntary: Peer workers are partners or consultants to those they serve. They do not dictate the types of services provided or the elements of recovery plans that will guide their work with peers. Participation in peer recovery support services is always contingent on peer choice.
•Relationship-focused: The relationship between the peer worker and the peer is the foundation on which peer recovery support services and support are provided. The relationship between the peer worker and peer is respectful, trusting, empathetic, collaborative, and mutual.
•Trauma-informed: Peer recovery support utilizes a strength-based framework that emphasizes physical, psychological, and emotional safety and creates opportunities for survivors to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.
Additionally:
•Peer Substance Coaches must have a working knowledge of the various aspects of St. Olaf College to appropriately assist, advise, and serve as a liaison between students and other members of the St. Olaf community.
•Peer Substance Coaches must present with genuine sensitivity and concern for others as individuals, as well as a personal and professional commitment that goes beyond outlined responsibilities.
•Peer Substance Coaches must possess an awareness and working knowledge of equity and inclusion pedagogy and demonstrate an established commitment to anti-racism at St. Olaf College
•Peer Substance Coaches must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the college.
•Peer Substance Coaches will be given to applicants who have no more than one other work-study position on campus for the academic year.
•Peer Substance Coaches will be given to applicants who will be on campus for both the fall and spring semesters (this does not include Interim).
