Description
Oregon City Parks and Recreation is hiring Recreation Leaders to be counselors for our Day Camps.

We are hiring Recreation Leaders for our Summer Day Camps that take place from June 23rd-August 22nd. All seasonal positions are required to be here for at least 7 of the 9 weeks of camps. Training for Camps will take place on June 17 and 18.

The shifts being hired for are:

For our Camp that takes place at The Oregon City Swimming Pool, the shifts being hired for are:
  • Shift A: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:30pm
  • Shift B: Monday-Friday 8:30am-2:00pm with on call from 2:00pm-5:30pm
  • Shift C: Monday-Friday 12:00pm-5:30pm with on call from 8:30am-12:00pm
For our Camp that takes place at Rivercrest Park, the shifts being hired for are:
  • Shift A: Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm
  • Shift B: Monday-Friday 8:30am-1:00pm with on call from 1:00pm-5:30pm
  • Shift C: Monday-Friday 11:00am-4:30pm with on call 8:30am-11:00am
Classification Summary
Under direct supervision of related department management team, the Recreation Lead is responsible for leading our Recreation Leaders and the activities of children in a day camp setting as well as assisting with various department special events. The Recreation Lead will assist in overseeing and being the first point of contact for providing cap activities, coordinating and implementing programs and activities, and for ensuring safety policies and procedures are being adhered to by participants, and designated staff.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Distinguishing Characteristics
The Recreation Lead is a position that requires competency in multiple areas for planning and organizing youth programs and special event activities.
Examples of Duties

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the planning, implementation, and supervision of recreational activities and events, and staff and volunteers. Provides guidance to subordinates regarding planning, scheduling, and assignment of duties within all leisure service areas.
  • Completes and submits proper records including camp schedules, counselor work schedules, accident/incident reports and attendance. Assists with the distribution and execution of weekly schedule of activities.
  • Ensures staff are following established guidelines, safety practices, procedures, and standards. Practice safe work habits and contribute to the safety of self, camp and event staff and the general public.
  • Develops age-appropriate camp curriculum (3-12 years) in accordance with the objectives of the program. Maintains an orderly, clean, and safe environment for the children while promoting an inclusive program directed toward accentuating positive behaviors, physical development, and emotional growth. Provide a program/class atmosphere that promotes and encourages inclusion and satisfaction of all participants.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, and all necessary documentation for the operation of the camp. Monitors facility activities for participant compliance with health and safety rules.
  • Provides excellent customer service to the camp and event attendees and communicates to parents about camper's progress and activities.
  • Assists with on-going program evaluations, implementing approved recommendations as needed. Responds to inquiries and complaints related to programs, services, and special events. Provides reports daily, weekly, or as needed with communication to the Recreation Coordinator to monitor camp activities throughout the program.
  • Promotes all facilities, programs, and services when in contact with the general public. Serve as a front-line contact for education and enforcement of City policies and codes in public facilities.
  • Respect diversity in the workplace.
  • Flexible schedule required with ability to work days, evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Uses independent, sound judgment to react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Maintain a neat, professional appearance. Identify and prevent hazards, implement solutions, maintain safe environments. Follow written and oral instructions. Work in a group or individual situation, with minimum supervision. Communicate courteously and cooperatively with other staff and the general public. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other staff members, program participants and the general public.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) seasons of experience in youth, youth programs, recreation, or equivalent combination of related experience.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Other Requirements
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Possession of a valid and appropriate Oregon driver's license. Must have or obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Bilingual preferred
Supplemental Information

Working Conditions/Physical and Mental Demands
Requires speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations. Requires the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions. Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant health and safety considerations exist by way of physical activity.
