The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. To perform these critical services, DEP employs nearly 6,000 individuals in a variety of field and professional positions. DEP is currently seeking a dynamic individual to serve as Chief of Staff for the Bureau of Environmental Compliance.The Bureau of Environmental Compliance (BEC) enforces the City’s Air and Noise Codes, regulations that affect the health and safety of the public and environment. The Bureau aims to enhance quality of life for New Yorkers by relieving neighborhoods of environmental pollutants and stressors. The Chief of Staff supports the Bureau’s mission by ensuring its smooth functioning, advancing policies, evaluating progress, and coordinating agency projects with senior staff and City Hall. The Chief of Staff reports to the Deputy Commissioner and works closely with Bureau and agency leadership to fulfill DEP’s strategic goals.Provides oversight and guidance to projects of strategic importance, including cross-functional collaborations.Leads and directs Bureau personnel in research projects.Participates in meetings, seminars, and policy development activities, providing recommendations.Monitors project deliverables, assisting staff to meet deadlines.Serves as team leader for intra-bureau or multi-bureau initiatives, reports progress, and tracks follow-up actions.Represents the Deputy Commissioner on special projects.Coordinates presentations, sets agendas, and summarizes meetings for senior staff.Manages complex projects from inception to completion.Researches, analyzes policies and regulations, and makes recommendations.Develops stakeholder strategies on policy and procedural issues.Prepares internal and external communications for the Deputy Commissioner.Represents the Deputy Commissioner with staff, City entities, and stakeholders.Analyzes quantitative data and synthesizes information into presentations and memos.Performs other duties as required.Minimum QualificationsFor Assignment Level I (physical, biological, environmental sciences, public health): A master's degree in an appropriate field. For higher levels: a doctorate or additional experience as specified. All candidates must have at least a master's degree and relevant experience. A two-year City Research Scientist Level I experience can substitute for some requirements.Note: Appointments are subject to a minimum one-year probationary period.Preferred SkillsExcellent organizational and communication skills.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage diverse communities.Attention to detail and discretion.Experience with high-profile officials and familiarity with NYC government.Ability to write speeches and articles.Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and other software.Additional InformationThis position is open to qualified persons with disabilities under the 55-a Program.
