Seasonal Firewise Field Representative

The National Fire Protection Association's mission is to help save lives and reduce loss with information, knowledge and passion. Established in 1896, we are dedicated to the elimination of death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. The Association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering the NFPA mission.
The Firewise USA® Recognition Program is NFPA's flagship outreach and engagement program for community wildfire risk reduction. It provides a collaborative framework to help neighbors get organized and take action across adjacent properties to increase ignition resistance of homes and other structures, reducing wildfire risk at local level. It has grown from a handful of pilot sites in 2002 to reach more than 2,400 sites across the US, helping millions of people take part in their own wildfire safety. In California, the program is valued as part of the state's Safer from Wildfire regulations that tie community risk reduction actions to incentives including availability and affordability of property insurance.
NFPA is looking to add a Seasonal Firewise Field Representative in California. The Firewise field representative - California role will support the growing interest in the Firewise USA program in California, by providing targeted outreach and education to residents at risk, fire service organizations, local officials, and non-governmental organizations about the program criteria and goals. The Firewise field representative is responsible for responding to inquiries about the program criteria and eligibility; connecting potential participants with local advocates and resources; presenting educational information on wildfire risk reduction and program details to interested audiences; and relaying findings and information from the field to the Wildfire Division in the interest of program improvement and expansion.
The successful candidate has foundational knowledge of wildfire impacts on the built environment, including the science of home ignition; strong communication and public speaking skills; experience in working with individuals and community organizations; and experience working with fire departments.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Respond to inquiries from California residents, businesses, or government representatives about NFPA's Firewise USA recognition program and related wildfire mitigation programs and resources.
2. Present and educate target audiences with the goal of increasing participation of eligible communities in the Firewise USA program
3. Advise leaders of currently recognized Firewise USA sites on ways to expand or enhance their current activities to remain active in the program and to grow mitigation efforts across the community.
4. Connect potential program participants with local/state resources including contacts with fire departments, Fire Safe Councils, grant-makers, and CAL FIRE wildfire mitigation specialists as needed.
5. Identify challenges or obstacles to program entry and relay findings to the NFPA Wildfire Division with the goal of continuous improvement and development of new solutions.
Requirements
1. California resident
2. A minimum of five years of work experience in wildfire risk reduction, fire prevention education, or related fields.
3. Up to 50% travel.
4. Must have a valid driver's license.
5. Proven public speaking experience.
6. Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
7. Experienced in building and maintaining strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
The seasonal employee will work approximately 20 hours per week but not to exceed 975 hours per year.
