Orthopedic Technician will provide services to the medical staff, support staff, inpatients and outpatients at BROOKE ARMY MEDICAL CENTER as needed to meet its mission. While specific tasks are outlined as listed below, responsibilities include but are not necessarily inclusive of tasks in which the HCW shall provide.

All services shall be performed in accordance with established principles, practices, and ethics of the medical, and specialty professions/organizations. The standards of performance shall reflect the degree of care, skill, and learning expected of a reasonably prudent Orthopedic Technician.

Required Qualification:

· Degree/Education: High school diploma or equivalent with additional training or education; supplemented with one (1) year of related experience in an accredited health care hospital which results in familiarity with and knowledge of hospital or clinic routines and procedures in orthopedics, including orthopedic trauma service, pediatrics, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and/or spine.

Staffing and Scheduling:

The HCW shall work Monday through Friday not to exceed 40 hours per week, excluding federal holidays and training holidays.

Job Responsibilities: The Orthopedic Technician will provide the following services and in strict compliance with standing orders and protocols set forth by the MTF, and IAW JC guidelines to include, but will not necessarily be limited to the following:

· Assists physicians with patient care; properly fits and applies pre-operative braces, crutches, and

other soft goods; assists in preparation for and application of casts and orthopedic appliances; changes dressings; removes sutures, casts, and splints.

· Assists physicians and nurses with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations

minor surgical procedures, fracture reductions, etc; instructs patients in cast and traction care and the use of orthopedic appliances.

· Maintains clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room; orders special supplies and/or equipment.

· Coordinates data collection resources for the clinic information systems.

· Remains current with orthopedic trends, care and supplies; performs other duties as assigned

Experience:

· Practical knowledge of examinations, equipment and procedures to make the necessary preparations and provide assistance to the physician in the clinic.

· Practical knowledge of anatomy and physiology pertaining to conditions involving orthopedic injuries, disorders and conditions in order to communicate with and understand exchanges with medical personnel. Practical knowledge of safe and proper use and operation of specialized medical equipment to include: pulse oximeter, dynamap or equivalent, cardiac monitor, electrocautery device, cast saw, tourniquet device and various other types of equipment, mini c-arm, TPS, Compartment Pressure Monitor (Stryker or other brand used by hospital.)

· Practical knowledge of examinations, equipment, surgical instruments, implants, methods, and procedures pertaining to Orthopedics along with knowledge of related practical nursing and surgical procedures.

· Practical knowledge of examinations, equipment and procedures to make the necessary preparations and provide assistance to the physician in the clinic.
