Who We Are
Boston Consulting Group partners with leaders in business and society to tackle their most important challenges and capture their greatest opportunities. BCG was the pioneer in business strategy when it was founded in 1963. Today, we help clients with total transformation-inspiring complex change, enabling organizations to grow, building competitive advantage, and driving bottom-line impact.
To succeed, organizations must blend digital and human capabilities. Our diverse, global teams bring deep industry and functional expertise and a range of perspectives to spark change. BCG delivers solutions through leading-edge management consulting along with technology and design, corporate and digital ventures—and business purpose. We work in a uniquely collaborative model across the firm and throughout all levels of the client organization, generating results that allow our clients to thrive.
Practice Area
BCG’s Industrial Goods practice serves four broad industrial segments: Automotive & Mobility, Engineered Products & Infrastructure, Materials & Process Industries, and Transportation & Logistics. We help companies in these sectors think beyond the limits of their traditional business models, choose where and how they should add value, and reorganize to defend themselves against new threats and explore new opportunities.
What You'll Do
BCG’s Industrial Goods practice is looking for experienced consultants at the Principal level. Qualified individuals will play a critical role in enriching project work and bringing forward-thinking solutions to our clients. Ideal candidates will have previous management consulting experience in either the Chemicals or Industrial Automation space and demonstrated leadership in growing client relations, people and knowledge development.
Principals work at the forefront of client engagements and serve as a key driver of client value. At BCG, we set our standard for value creation high, challenging ourselves to deliver tangible and positive change. Our work must provide next-level insights, change the mindset of our clients, and directly lead to clients taking action and executing their business in new ways.
As the senior person most frequently at the client site, you will interact with the client lead on a day-to-day basis to ensure that expectations are aligned. Principals provide the project management oversight required to meet client expectations. Responsibilities may include the development of presentations, managing of external relationships and consultant work progress, providing status reports, and overseeing budgets.
Projects vary based on client needs, but the importance of seeing possibilities where other people find limits will be a constant. Principals go deep to unlock insight, challenge established thinking, drive transformation, improve performance, and deliver bottom-line impact.
What You'll Bring
• Demonstrated expertise within the Industrial Goods industry, with specific experience in Chemicals or Industrial Automation.
• 5+ years of post-graduate school consulting experience, with 3+ years at a team lead level, ideally with a focus on Chemicals or Industrial Automation.
• Strong analytical skills and a high capacity for conceptual thinking. Ability to develop leading edge business models, frameworks for analysis, and long-term business strategies that maximize shareholder value. Must be able to thrive in a hypothesis-based environment where inductive rather than deductive reasoning is the norm.
• Proven experience in process excellence, with a demonstrated ability to juggle multiple stakeholders, deadlines, and deliverables while maintaining a strong focus on keeping projects on track and on time. Must excel in managing complex workflows and ensuring high-quality outcomes under pressure.
• Experience with clients and topics in either the Chemicals or Industrial Automation sectors, including:
- Chemicals: Petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, specialty ingredients and additives, materials science
- Industrial Automation: Industrial control systems, robotics systems, industrial internet of things (IIOT), process automation
• Demonstrated ability to manage client engagements, client relationships, and provide “thought leadership” to teams, fully owning the responsibility for the quality of engagements.
• A combination of managing teams and “hands on” delivery experience is critical. Principals supervise junior consultants as engagements are executed, but must be prepared to roll up their sleeves and get directly involved as well.
• A solid track record of building strong client relationships with large organizations, as well as identifying opportunities to deepen those relationships and grow the business.
• Previous consulting experience required.
• Engineering Degree or Advanced Degree preferred.
• Based in or willing to relocate to Chicago, Detroit, or Minneapolis.
Who You'll Work With
You’ll collaborate with BCG team members from many backgrounds and disciplines in a team-oriented, relationship-driven environment. Working alongside some of the world’s top minds on cases that reshape business, government and society, you will increase your understanding of complex business problems from diverse perspectives and develop new skills. At the same time, you’ll partner with senior clients, taking on the role of trusted advisor, and work at all levels of the client organization to find and execute value creation strategies that result in meaningful, enduring impact.
