Position Summary The primary role of the Director of Business Development is to drive the revenue growth of the firm, enhance brand awareness through key initiatives, and manage the Business Development and Proposals Teams throughout the United States.

This leadership position is responsible for driving strategy across the firm’s industry and practice groups. It serves as a creative and motivating force in the development of the business development and proposal teams, guiding the implementation of comprehensive, firm‑wide business development strategies. The success of the Director of Business Development will be directly related to the ability to be a change agent and exercise leadership while working with and on behalf of stakeholders throughout the firm. This role will collaborate with the Chief Business Development Officer, Senior Director of Marketing & Communications, and partner leadership to create, articulate, and implement short‑ and long‑term strategies to strengthen brand awareness, enhance client relationships, and generate new revenue.

Essential Job Functions Lead the development, execution, and review of relevant strategies and related initiatives for the related practices and lawyers. Lead and drive related revenue generation initiatives including client targeting, market research, responses to RFPs, and client relationship reviews. Work in partnership with the communications, brand, and award and recognition teams to develop and execute strategic visibility initiatives and build brand awareness. Lead team efforts related to strategic key clients, providing direction, infrastructure, KPIs, and metrics for the relevant initiatives.

Build, manage, and lead a highly effective team of marketing and business development professionals located across the U. S. Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with firm‑wide industry leaders, practice group leaders, managing directors, and with the broader department. Work across teams and departments to elevate matter collection and streamline relevant business development knowledge management processes for use in client‑facing material.

Partner with the department leadership team to drive cross‑functional projects and efforts to increase efficiency, collaboration, communication, and visibility for both the department as well as the firm. Work with the Business Development Team to drive the implementation of key initiatives, identify and pursue cross‑selling opportunities. Assist in the development and implementation of strategies and activities to expand existing client relationships and generate new business. Create consistency in messaging and best practices throughout the department and firm via ongoing staff development and training.

Share best practices between industry and practice groups as well as the department to maximize productivity of business development and marketing efforts. Coach and develop team, identifying developmental needs of others and mentoring, training or otherwise helping to improve their knowledge and skillset. Guide, direct, and motivate team, providing guidance and direction to team, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. Identify and develop best practices across the department, establishing long‑range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve them.

Position Requirements 4‑year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred; industry certifications preferred. 15 years’ progressive expertise in marketing and business development required; substantial experience leading company‑wide initiatives within a multi‑office setting, preferably in a professional services firm environment required. Strong business development abilities required, including setting priorities, planning, organization, follow‑through, delegation and negotiation skills; and ability to build, manage and track budgets and analyze ROI. Ability to motivate attorneys to engage in business development and to work with them to develop and implement business development plans.

Experience

providing a high level of client service to individuals at all levels of an organization. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write and produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports and client‑facing presentation materials. Must be forward‑thinking with proven ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges. High level of maturity and confidence necessary to interact with sophisticated internal and external clients.

Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office products. A strong background in business development and marketing technology, tools, processes and innovation to drive revenue and efficiency. Outstanding interpersonal and relationship‑building skills with the ability to clearly communicate, build consensus and create excitement and support for initiatives and programs. Team first approach with a proven track record of managing and mentoring a large, geographically diverse team.

Dynamic energy level, “can do” attitude, willingness to lead by example, results oriented and client service mentality. Ability to tolerate ambiguity to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities. Strong leadership skills to guide, manage and inspire the team. Ability to develop and implement effective strategies that align with the firm’s overall business objectives.

Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate discretion. Exceptional verbal and written communication and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Collaboration and facilitation skills to work with various departments and facilitate their ability to work with each other. Ability to work independently and with a team, and to delegate and manage resources effectively.

Strong leadership skills to manage and develop a large and geographically dispersed staff. Strong interpersonal skills, IQ, EQ and AQ to build and maintain positive relationships with employees, partners and leaders. Exhibit high degree of initiative and critical‑thinking skills in exercising independent judgment and making decisions in managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven, detail‑oriented work environment. Creative thinker who is open to considering multiple approaches to issues and collaborating with other leaders to develop and execute plans.

Ability to manage and lead change initiatives related to talent and people management. Understands and stays up to date on current legal market trends, news, and innovations. Compensation

And Benefits Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. For this position, the anticipated salary range is $250,000 to $300,000, with the final offer dependent on the candidate’s location. The above range does not include a discretionary bonus, however bonus opportunities are non‑guaranteed, and are dependent upon individual and firm performance.
