We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach.Position FunctionWe are seeking a Senior Extension Associate and Director to lead the New York Center for Organics Recycling and Education (NY CORE) at Cornell University in Ithaca NY. The NY-CORE is a new initiative that will continue the work of the Cornell Waste Management Institute to promote organics recycling in farming communities throughout NY State. Our goals are to deliver research-based knowledge, training, and technical support in service of organics recycling and reuse. The Sr. Extension Associate/Director will manage program staff, engage directly in program activities, and identify and secure continued sources of funding in support of program goals. The NY CORE will lead the development of on-site training and technical assistance to farming communities and organic residual generators. Such activities will include training and technical support on composting methods, feedstock management, equipment selection, operations, compost application, and identification of haulers. The NY Core will also conduct research, development, and documentation of best management practices in organics recycling.Anticipated Division of Time60%: Lead the development and implementation of NY-CORE. Provide technical support and training to those who generate, process, and apply organic residuals. Identify research and education needs for organic residuals management in NY State. Conduct applied research and development into best practices in organics management. Lead extension and research programs with State and Federal Agencies and appropriate public and private organizations. Develop, design, and conduct outreach activities.20%: Documentation and communication of best practices in organics management, which could include serving information on websites, social media, newsletters, extension publications, and peer-reviewed research articles.20%: Staff oversight, goal setting, project management, and grant writing in support of the NY-CORE.RequirementsM.S.in Soil Science, Plant Science, Environmental Engineering, or allied fields is required. A senior extension associate is expected to have six or more years of related work experience (eight or more if the qualifying degree is a master’s degree that is non-terminal for the field). PhD is preferred.The candidate must have considerable experience with the management of organic residuals including farm scale composting technologies and practices. Experience in agricultural extension is desirable. Experience with mortality management is also desirable.
