Critical Care Hospitalist
Status: Per Diem
Job Summary
Function as a mid-level provider in the management of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients and cardiovascular intensive care unit patients (CVICU). The primary responsibility will be for this provider to care for patients in the CVICU as this unit's frontline provider. Practicing within developed standardized procedures and process protocols, the Critical Care Hospitalist will evaluate, diagnose, treat, and implement the plan of care for PICU and CVICU patients in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Critical Care Attending Physician at all times.
Job Duties*
- Care for the full spectrum of pediatric cardiac critical illness for patients in the CVICU as this unit's frontline provider in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Critical Care Attending Physician at all times
- Perform and document comprehensive history and physical examinations for CVICU admissions
- Provide coverage for the PICU in a supervisory role to the PICU resident and in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Critical Care Attending Physician at all times
- Cover any patients in the 3rd floor PICU as this unit's frontline provider (unless a PICU Nurse Practitioner is present) in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Critical Care Attending Physician at all times
- Evaluate and recommend treatment for patients in the Emergency Department as requested by the Emergency Department Attending Physician or Critical Care Attending Physician
- Order and interpret appropriate radiology and laboratory studies
- Order appropriate medications
- Order appropriate consultations
- Develop a comprehensive treatment plan that includes specialized consultative services, as indicated
- Care for children on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
- The Critical Care Hospitalist may be asked to participate in intra-facility and inter-facility patient transport at the discretion of the Critical Care Attending Physician
- The Critical Care Hospitalist will receive a patient handover report on all patients they are covering
- Maintain professional and collaborative interactions with other medical providers, patients and families
Minimum Requirements
- Current CA Medical License
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification
- DEA Registration
*Based on the approval of CHOC Children's hospital privileges. Some physicians, due to training background, may be restricted to covering the CVICU only. In this case, the job description and pay scale for these individuals may be modified
Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.
