Job DescriptionPosition Description:This position is responsible for providing a clean, healthy, and well-maintained area of assignment. This job is distinguished from the Building Service Technician by the following characteristics: Assist in accomplishing building service duties in various locations and job assignments due to employee or supervisor absence. This position will act as back up support to the Building Service Supervisor and the Building Service Technician. Working in accordance with established policies and procedures this position will perform manual work in a variety of cleaning duties in and around university buildings and facilities. This includes but not limited to classrooms, lab rooms, offices, residence halls, guest rooms, and restrooms.Major Responsibilities: Performs cleaning duties in areas as assigned such as; wash and sanitize toilets, sinks, showers, and restocking dispensers, straightening, dusting, wiping surfaces, vacuuming /sweeping mopping and floors, clean white/chalk boards, wash windows, wash walls, wash/wipe down trash cans, take out trash, etc.Act as back-up/fill-in for Building Services Technician and Building Services SupervisorPerform building services work in addition to directing and coordinating staff, as needed to accomplish work goalsProvide additional work assistance to custodians as directed by Building Service SupervisorStrive to create and contribute to a pleasant work environment by treating all levels of staff with respect and co-operationWorks as an individual or as part of a team to meet and exceed standards for assigned staff with respect and co-operationPromotes a positive team spirit within the department and the workplaceUnlock/lock buildingsKeep entrances safe and cleanCleans spills, soiled areas and other conditions as observed and or directedMaintains all equipment and supplies in proper condition, and are properly storedEnsures work areas are safe and that procedures regarding cleaners or objects are strictly adhered toStock all equipment and supply carts with adequate suppliesEnsure cleaning schedules are followedProvide exceptional customer serviceReport maintenance and repair needs via the work order systemWork with Building Services Supervisor to promote safetyOther duties as assignedRequired Knowledge and Skills:High School diploma or equivalent requiredRequired 1-2 years related experienceMust be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's licenseOther Qualifications:Must present a neat, clean, well-groomed appearanceMust be in good physical health; walking/standing, reaching, bending/twisting, kneeling/crouching/crawling, lifting, forceful gripping/grasping, pushing, pulling or repetitive motion about 95% of the timeAbility to frequently lift, carry, push/pull up to 50 poundsAbility to operate low and high impact toolsAbility to climb stairs and laddersWork from a ladder and work with arms and hands overheadMust be able to work well with little or no supervision and take directionMust be able to maintain a courteous, friendly, and helpful attitude with individuals on campusMust be cooperative and willing to help fellow coworkers at all timesAbility to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfacesSuccessful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds.All offers of employment with Valparaiso University are contingent upon clear results of a thorough background check.
