Lead Advance Practice Provider, Emergency Medicine Observation Unit

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Provides leadership, management, and training of the Advance Practice Provider (APP) in the Emergency Observation Unit.  Recruits and hires APP staff, establishes work schedules, supervises staff performance, conducts performance evaluations, and determines and disseminates quality activities and design for assigned staff.  Position ensures operational efficiencies through patient throughput and customer satisfaction. Work closely with ED Observation medical director to obtain key performance measure for the unit. Coordinates clinical scheduling with the department APP scheduler.  Tracks APP productivity and provides reports to management.  Provides primary care to patients in the ED Observation Unit.  Assist in the evaluation and treatment of patients.  Conducts patient interviews and collects and interprets diagnostic data.  Under the direction of a physician performs physical examinations and specialized procedures. Documents the delivery of care in the patients medical record. Provides emergency medical screening, evaluation, management and appropriate follow-up to patients.  Initiates patient care plans, including medical and pharmacological management as needed. Participates in research and incorporates its findings into practice. Actively participates in continuous quality improvement projects including but not limited to lab and radiology call backs. Maintains a high level of customer service with patients, staff, administrators and physicians. Provides and/or serves as resource for patient/family and staff education. Stays up to date with divisional policies, guidelines and medical staff and hospital policies and rules and regulations. Performs other duties as required by supervisor.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant and appropriate licensure (PA or NP) required. Minimum of five years of experience in emergency medicine or observation medicine is preferred.

 

Administrative Duties to include but not limited to scheduling, prepare agenda and chair monthly meetings, attend leadership meetings, and frequent meetings with medical director.  Track and approve (along with the medical director and scheduler) providers vacation/leave.  Track performance criteria. Encourages academic and clinical excellence, encourages professionalism and positive attitudes among peers and colleagues.
