Nursing Technician

Position Summary:
M-F 11P-7A. no weekends or holidays.
Establishes and maintains positive interpersonal relationships and promotes effective teamwork with patients, families, coworkers and the community to meet customer service goals.
a. Provides prompt compassionate service that exceeds patient expectations following UTMC nursing professional practice model.
b. Listens to patients/ visitors concerns, directing them to the appropriate person.
c. Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members.
d. Assists physician and other members of the healthcare team when appropriate.
e. Answers phone calls, patient call system with a pleasant tone and professional manner.
f. Answers and responds to calls in a timely manner, relaying information as needed to the appropriate person.
g. Demonstrates an awareness of visitation restrictions and special precautions required to enter a patient's room.
h. Responds to patient inquiries appropriately, maintaining confidentiality and safety.
i. Unit meets customer service goal.
Efficiency and Effectiveness
Maintains neatness cleanliness and readiness of physical facilities of patient care units
a. Demonstrates appropriate use of equipment, such as pneumatic tube system, patient call system, telephones, etc.
b. Delivers required amount of linen to patient rooms prior to care; removes excess or dirty linen from patients room.
c. Empties garbage and linens when needed and prior to leaving duty.
d. Stocks unit with necessary supplies, return excess supplies for credit.
e. Contacts appropriate departments as necessary to maintain a clean working environment.
f. Performs housekeeping duties as directed.
g. Organizes supplies, equipment and personal belongings in the patient room.
h. Identifies waste and participates in process improvement.
All direct patient care provided by the Nursing Technician will be under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse assigned to those patients.
Performs direct patient care activities while maintaining maximum comfort and safety of patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse.
a. Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
b. Receives assignment and bedside report from off-going Nursing Technician and assigned RN every shift.
c. Handoffs are performed using the standardized approach of ISBAR (introduction, situation, background, assessment, recommendation) in a clear, concise, and accurate manner with an opportunity for questions from NT and RN.
d. Obtains and maintains accurate patient data and documents appropriately in medical records including but not limited to vital signs (BP, HR, RR, temporal artery, or oral temperatures), intake and output (outputs only in critical care), height and weight etc.
e. Recognizes and communicates changes in patient's vital signs, physical and/or mental condition to the Registered Nurse.
f. Provides personal care assistance with activities of daily living to patients including: bathing, dressing, eating, drinking, oral care, elimination and transportation.
g. Assists Registered Nurse in skin care including repositioning, cleaning of wounds, and pressure ulcer prevention.
h. Demonstrates ability to assist in patient transfers effectively and safely.
i. Apply monitoring devices as EKG leads and pulse oximetry probes.
j. Collects clean-catch urine, sputum, and stool specimens as directed and overseen by the Registered Nurse.
k. Demonstrates the ability and competency in operating equipment including but not limited to beds, chairs, lift equipment, alarms, bladder scanner, etc.
l. Assist with physical and pulmonary exercises including range of motion, incentive spirometry, cough, and deep breath etc. and document appropriately. Provides oral suctioning as needed.
Performs direct patient care activities while maintaining maximum comfort and safety of patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse assigned to those patients. (Continued)
m. Provides passive and active range of motion exercises as ordered; provides massages as ordered.
n. Appropriately decides on temporarily placing tube feeding equipment on hold while providing care.
o. Assists providers with medical treatments as approved and supervised by the Registered Nurse.
p. Initiates Code Blue system when appropriate; provides CPR until relieved by the Code Team.
q. Provides postmortem care as directed. May remove medical equipment / devices as appropriate and under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
r. Participates in other direct care duties specific to the nursing unit to which the NT is assigned. Refer to the unit specific duty and responsibility addendum.
Responds appropriately to emergency situations or unplanned events
a. Responds appropriately during emergent patient situations.
b. Assists with falls prevention activities on the nursing area, responding quickly as appropriate to enhance patient safety.
Provides nursing care specific to population served needs
a. Recognizes age-related/cultural variations in assessment data and other patient information and reports abnormalities appropriately.
b. Responds to patient need for diversionary activity considering age, developmental stage, and health status every shift.
Continues professional growth and development
a. Attends in-service, training programs, and staff meetings.
b. Participates in Shared Governance activities and initiatives via Unit-Based Council.
c. Maintains all required licenses, certifications and competencies.
d. Continues professional growth and development by obtaining advanced training and competencies through participation in the Nursing Technician Clinical Ladder program. (see addendum).
Follows through will education, competency assessments, communication and other activities as directed.
a. Successfully completes competency based orientation and periodic evaluation.
b. Demonstrates timely completion of mandatory education and compliance with associated standards.
c. Participates as requested in departmental QI/QA activities.
d. Reviews and adheres to information provided through huddle board, communication book, memos, staff meetings, etc.
e. Maintains good personal hygiene and complies with dress code.
Position Qualification:
High School diploma or GED required; Licensure as a Nursing Assistant in the state of Tennessee preferred.
