Job Description
8:00 A.M - 4:00 P.M
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Performs a full range of services as assigned under the general supervision of the Lead Supervisor, Assistant Director, Associate Director, the Blood Bank Director, Lab Director, and Lab Administrator.
AREAS OF RESPONSJBILITIES
Blood Bank
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs clinical testing in laboratory areas where he/she is fully trained and in compliance with Federal, NYSDOH, CAP and TJC standards.
- Accessions samples in the Hospital Blood Bank Computer.
- Answers the telephone and uses effective communication techniques.
- Issues blood and blood components.
- Processes patient specimens to include: ABO & Rh typing, antibody screening, antibody identification, testing for autoantibody, direct antiglobulin test, compatibility testing of patient samples and donor bloods.
- Processes neonatal samples and cord samples to include: ABO & Rh typing, direct antiglobulin test and elutions; performs the appropriate testing and provides compatible blood for exchange transfusion.
- Performs transfusion reaction workups.
- Performs daily Quality Control procedures which include monitoring of the satellite refrigerators, and maintaining inventory of blood and blood products.
- Enters all results in the Hospital Blood Bank Computer System.
- Performs other related tasks required by the supervisor.
- Complies with KCHC and department policies for Safety, Quality Improvement and Infection Control.
- Adheres to organization policy for annual education, assessment and in-service education.
- Displays positive interpersonal relations in dealing with staff, patients and visitors to promote teamwork, efficiency and to provide quality patient care.
- Assists in on-the-job or classroom training of subordinates, new personnel and other persons as required.
- Under direction reviews work of subordinates and evaluates work performance.
- Takes corrective action when needed to maintain the work of the lab at a satisfactory level.
- Orders and maintains adequate amount of stock, reagents and other supplies or assists with this function.
- Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals.
- Understands the principles of and competently performs a variety of techniques in both manual and automated testing; follows KCHC laboratory established policy and procedure guidelines.
- Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines, records and files all data obtained.
- Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
- Provides guidance and technical training to clinical laboratory technicians assigned at Levels I and II and technologists and other appropriate laboratory personnel; coordinates, reviews, and monitors their work; presents constructive feedback and suggestions on activities of subordinates to senior leadership.
- Follows KCHC safety protocol at all times.
- Follows standard and complex scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
- Participates in non-routine testing procedures in association with specialized research program(s); makes suggestions to minor modifications to procedures, techniques, and tests as appropriate and required.
- Reports critical value results promptly and documents them immediately as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines.
CALIBRATIONS AND QUALITY CONTROLS/ QUALITY ASSURANCE:
- Analyzes all quality control materials and reviews data.
- Complies with all quality control rules as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines.
- Takes corrective action when necessary.
- Documents activities as necessary.
- Enters and retrieves patient data accurately utilizing the laboratory computer system.
PREVENTIVE _MAINTENANCE:
- Performs preventive maintenance.
- Documents activities as required.
- Performs troubleshooting techniques for major instruments when applicable.
- Corrects problems or notifies the supervisor immediately.
- Documents all corrective action taken.
OTHER FACTORS:
- Attends, participates, and evaluates continuing and in-service education programs.
- Is aware of, contributes to, and observes laboratory safety at all times.
- Maintains strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA) at all times.
- Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methods and equipment if requested.
- Displays knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology.
- Displays knowledge in area of specialty.
- Prepares packages for shipment within the guidelines of KCHC laboratory established policy and procedure.
- Completes all required documentation and reporting in accordance with departmental and other regulatory schedules.
OTHER DUTIES
- The following maybe assigned or performed under the supervision of a supervisor:
- Plan and direct the work of subordinate staff engaged in delivering a comprehensive range of laboratory, scientific, technical and diagnostic services.
- Communicates pertinent information to laboratory management especially problems and nonconformances.
- Provides leadership in laboratory operations:
- Directs the operations of a group.
- Allocates all resources efficiently to ensure proper coverage.
- Manages personnel effectively.
- Complies with all policies and procedures.
- Solve problems.
- Proper and safe practice in the operation and maintenance of technical equipment.
- Ensures timely turn-around time of samples received in the laboratory.
- Ensures that the reagent and other laboratory supplies are used within the Laboratory Guidelines - e.g. reagents are dated when received and when opened before placing on the instrument.
- Performs tests requiring special skills and assists the laboratory in special circumstances whenever necessary.
- Checks and monitors maintenance of instruments.
- Checks and monitors that quality control is performed and recorded; assures that all remedial actions are taken if necessary.
- Ensures that all system functions are within established performance specifications.
- Monitors examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Monitors that proper record keeping practice is maintained (includes storage and
retrieval of data).

Includes the safe use and handling of toxic, infectious, fumes, electrical and other biohazardous substances.

Minimum Qualifications
- Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and
- Candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 1 0, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public HeaIth Law.
