Job Description
Under direct supervision of the Histology Supervisor follow the Laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing and prepares specimens for analysis. Knowledge of histology embedding, microtomy, special stains, routine staining
- Performs clinical testing in Histology Laboratory where he/she is fully trained and in compliance with Federal, NYSDOH, CAP and TJC standards.
- Able to perform proper tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, routine H&E and special stains.
- Process Frozen Section slides, e.g., microtomy and staining
- Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated.
- Prepare solutions and reagents for H&E and special stain procedures.
- Ensure timely turn-around-time of samples received in the laboratory.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and perform troubleshooting when necessary.
- Ensure that the reagents and other laboratory supplies are used within the laboratory guidelines, e.g., reagents are dated when received and when opened before placing in use.
- Perform quality control for each method.
- Perform lot-to-lot verification and control slide verification.
- Change solutions for equipment and follow safe procedures for disposal of chemical waste.
- Ensure proper function checks (e.g., correlation, quality control, etc.).
- Knowledgeable of infectious control practices and procedures.
- Perform filing of finished blocks and slides.
- Monitors supplies, inventory and equipment for adequacy, accuracy and reliability.
- Performs proper record keeping and maintains documents and forms in an orderly fashion.
- Assists the Histology Supervisor as directed and in the absence of supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED.
One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests andanalyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 571 of the New York State PublicHealth Law.
In addition to being licensed as a clinical laboratory technologist by the NYSED, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined inTitle 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
