Job Summary/Purpose: Under the direction of the building administration, special education team and INSPIRE program, performs a variety of duties related to assisting students with emotional disorders, intense behavior challenges and other related disorders with specialized services.

A Behavioral Support Specialist (BSS) is the individual responsible for assessing students with behavior issues, collecting data on the students, working with teachers, counselors and school administrators to devise and implement a behavior plan for the student and evaluating the effectiveness of the plan. A BSS teaches and supports the implementation of coping and social skills in all areas of the school (i.e., in classrooms, during specials, lunch, recess, and during transitions. A BSS primarily works with students in the highest level of Tier II behavior support. The position calls for an ability to read the room/others and to know when to remove students or the assigned student from a situation or when to wait for de-escalation and/or apply de-escalation strategies. At all times the BSS (and all staff) must remain calm and professional. A BSS also will have other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Minimum of sixty (60) college credit hours required. As a condition of continued employment, job incumbent must have and retain a valid Missouri Substitute Teaching Certificate. Job incumbent is required to successfully attend and document 15 hours of training during the first year of employment and AT LEAST 10 hours each year thereafter, as mandated by DESE, as a condition of continued employment.

* Commitment to understanding trauma informed care.
* Able to verbally communicate, clearly and understandably, information and ideas to others.

* Able to model effective practices with students.

Experience:

* Work experience in school setting assisting with the teaching of others preferred.
* Experience working with individuals challenged with emotional regulation.

Hours: 8:00-3:20 PM

Salary: $18.36
