General Functions

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides supportive services to participants in Recovery Services' residential programs. The Behavioral Health Technician acts as support staff to our residential clinical and non-clinical staff. This position supports program technical and clinical needs, assists in organizing and maintaining facilities, and helps work therapy departments, case managers, and peer staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Behavioral Health Technician, I
  • Monitor day to day program schedules.
  • Participate in milieu and communicate any issues or concerns within the program.
  • Complete required and assigned documentation by using shift reports and interdepartmental communications.
  • Facilitate verbal de-escalation skills when necessary.
  • Understand and use Trauma-Informed and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques.
  • Provide social and emotional support to participants within Recovery Services programs.
  • Monitor and control visitor and guest access per Recovery Services and ensure adherence to procedures and program expectations.
  • Support participants and staff to meet and maintain all health and safety standards per policy and procedures.
  • Monitor participant passes, ensuring adherence to proper procedure and program expectations.
  • Assist in a commercial kitchen environment and engage in food service for participants.
  • Communicate any participant behavioral or emotional presentations to the treatment team.
  • Work closely with staff and participants to follow the program manual, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with scheduled participant meetings with approved family, tele-psych, and clinicians, for the smooth facilitation of groups, one-on-ones, training, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with all employees and team members toward achieving program goals.
  • Transport participants on assigned activities, case management services, and outings as needed.
  • Attend scheduled off-campus activities in support of the approved program goals such as fishing, hiking, canoeing, berry picking.
  • Monitor participants' self-administration of medication, ensuring adherence to policy and procedures.
  • Document all medical appointments, referrals, and medication transactions in support of all program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a respectful relationship with participants, former participants, family members, and peers in full accordance with HIPAA and 42CFR part 2 regulations.
  • Promote program rules and expectations for all participants.
  • Model professional, respectful, caring, calm demeanor in all interactions.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of assigned areas and surrounding offices.
  • Attend and participate in relevant training and meetings within assigned timeframes.
  • Complete administrative duties as required.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned.

Behavioral Health Technician, II
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Behavioral Health Technician I with higher efficiency and independence level.
  • Attend groups in assistance to the SUC team.
  • Support case management efforts.
  • Coordinate and provide training to other Behavioral Health Technicians.
  • Continuously review Behavioral Health Technician documentation for quality and assurance.
  • Support Program Supervisor in delegated duties.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities Related to Participant Privacy
  • Employee is expected to actively participate in CITC privacy training and to protect the privacy of participant information in accordance with CITC's privacy policies, procedures and practices, as required by federal and state law. Failure to comply with CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
  • Employee may access protected health information and other participant information only to the extent necessary to complete job duties. Employee may only share such information on a need to know basis with others who have job responsibilities related to treatment, payment, or other CITC operations.
  • Employee is encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy and any observed practices in violation of the policy to the designated Privacy Officer.

Job Specifications:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; public speaking, knowledge of proper grammar and vocabulary, spelling, and proofreading skills.
  • Must have strong writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy of fact reporting.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Ability to work with a PC and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and ability to make decisions and exercise good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and prioritize workload.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to coordinate multiple activities.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience conducting individual and group sessions.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to be cross-trained in any aspect of the program.

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Behavioral Health Technician, I
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Alaska Counselor Technician (CT) or higher to be completed within 1 year of date of hire.

Behavioral Health Technician, II
  • Meet all qualifications of a Behavioral Health Technician, I.
  • One (1) year of professional and supervised social service or related work experience working in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment.
  • Alaska Chemical Dependency Counselor I Certification within 1 year from date of hire.

Minimum qualifications for All Levels;
  • Alaska Food Handlers Card, or ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the social services field.
  • Experience in the substance use or mental health treatment services.
  • Experience with EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems.

Physical Requirements:
  • Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
  • Regularly sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Assist in facilitating recreational and subsistence activities, often outdoors.
  • Assist in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
