Position Summary:

The Medical Director is an essential leader advancing services, staffing and clinical operations of the Wabanaki Center for Healing and Recovery (WCHR). Services and programs include a 10-bed medication assisted withdrawal detox program; intensive outpatient program, partial hospitalization program; medication assisted treatment, and outpatient care. This individual will be responsible for clinical training and leadership, educational, organizational, quality assurance, and administrative responsibilities for facilities located in Bangor and Millinocket, Maine. The Medical Director will ensure clients have access to, and receive, the best treatment and services in a compassionate environment committed to learning and growth alongside a dedicated team having a positive impact on patient experience. This is full time, salaried position to include evenings and weekends. Travel is required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care:
  • Plans and supervises provision of treatment for patients (including regular review and notes in the patient's record) according to established CSAT and state guidelines with a strong emphasis on quality & customer service.
  • Signs patient record notes.
  • Oversees patient care provided by physician extender, signs charts, dosing levels, etc., when applicable.
  • Places patients into treatment.
  • Oversight of any patient site emergencies.
  • Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examination, documents health history and examination results to meet Federal and state guidelines and refers patient for care elsewhere when indicated (including appropriate follow up).
  • Initiates, alters, and terminates treatment following strict protocols meeting the approval of Federal & state guidelines as well as current medical literature for patient care.
  • Provides patient education specific to various disease processes within our scope of practice.
  • Oversees the continuum of care process for patients.
  • Maintains strict patient, employee, WPHW, and computer confidentiality.

Staff Supervision:
  • Collaborates with the Cedar Road Program Director on provision of substance use disorder services.
  • Directly supervises, or delegates supervision, to the providers and necessary supervision to nursing staff within the WPHW clinic settings as well as the other practice locations as needed.
  • Ensures the availability of adequate staffing to provide clinical care throughout the system, and to meet the regulatory requirements of individual programs.
  • Assists with recruitment.
  • In collaboration with leadership and Human Resources, ensures the appropriate performance review of all providers in the clinic settings.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, develops and maintains job descriptions for all providers in the clinics.
  • Provides for ongoing staff development and in-service training.

Quality Assurance:
  • Assures the quality of treatment and related services provided by the Agency's professional staff, though participation (directly or by designee) in the Agency's ongoing quality assurance and audit processes.
  • Develops policies and procedures for addiction medicine services in each program and as needed.
  • Ensures that addiction medicine services practice meets regulatory standards of each program.
  • Ensures that addiction medicine services care is appropriately documented in the medical records.
  • Participates in optimization of electronic record to ensure that clinical material is appropriately documented, and privacy maintained.
  • Collaborates with others to develop agency-wide clinical policies and procedures.
  • Participates in agency-wide Quality Assurance processes, including Incident Review meetings and Grievance Committee.
  • Collaborates with senior management and clinical staff in the Agency's development of a clinically relevant outcome evaluation process.
  • Ensures program compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Licensed Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in the State of Maine
  • At least 5 years of experience in the field of addiction medicine is preferred.
  • Board Certified or Eligible in Addiction Medicine
  • Current Maine license and X-waiver DEA license
  • Ability to prescribe methadone & buprenorphine.
  • At least 1 year experience in Addiction Medicine
  • Must be able to sign off on NP/PA charts.
  • Satisfactory drug screen and criminal background check
  • Experience in all benchmark levels of care within the ASAM placement criteria and can help grow programs for all stages of addiction.
  • Academic experience and can set evidence-based treatment standards for the entire department and for the health system in general.

  • Strong connection to and is invested in the tribal communities.
  • Passionate about addiction treatment and can be a strong champion for patients.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed and flexible.
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with patient and other members of organization.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong level of confidentiality due to the sensitivity of materials and information handled.
