Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Wellbeing - Substance Use position provides a broad range of prevention services to address alcohol/other drug issues on campus, including but not limited to implementation of evidence-based public health prevention strategies on campus using the social ecological framework, delivery, coordination, and management of evidence-based intervention services for students experiencing challenges with substance use, and operation of a recovery support program for students who identify as being in recovery from addiction. The Assistant Director will work closely with relevant departments within the Division of Campus Life, students, faculty/staff, and appropriate community agencies to develop, implement and evaluate programs and services to address substance use. The Assistant Director also provides leadership within the Office of Wellbeing in support of the Director of Wellbeing.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

* Designs, oversees, manages, evaluates, and delivers individual and group intervention services for alcohol, tobacco, and substance use to identified students including Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) sessions for both voluntary and mandated students, and operation of its respective electronic records systems.
* Initiates and coordinates referrals to campus partners and community agencies as needed, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams of clinicians and campus staff to address substance use management. Acts as a centralized resource and consultant for campus entities on substance use, prevention, intervention, and recovery.
* Manages documentation, facilitates recovery community group meetings, and provides individual support to members of the Wake Forest Collegiate Recovery Community. Develops and implements supportive programming for the Wake Forest Collegiate Recovery Community, providing sober activities for its members and allies.
* Designs and implements evidence-based alcohol and substance use prevention programs to educate and empower students in making healthy lifestyle choices. Tracks the reported use of alcohol and other substances in the WFU student community through health behavior surveys and other data collection methods.
* Engages in regular program assessment to ensure efficacy and positive outcomes.
* Educates the campus community on identifying and referring students who use substances in a way that negatively impacts their wellbeing.
* Organizes, leads, and facilitates the Alcohol and Other Drug Coalition, mobilizing campus and community partners to address substance use priorities.
* Manages routine administrative tasks, including budgeting and report development.
* Oversees the development and revision of campus policies related to alcohol and other drug use.
* Responsible for compliance obligations of the University related to alcohol and other drugs, including but not limited to federal biennial review.
* Cultivates a culture that values community wellbeing, supporting initiatives like the Okanagan
* Charter and implementing health education programs.
* Participates in departmental and institutional diversity and inclusion initiatives; ensures the delivery of culturally competent care for a diverse student body

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

* Master's degree in public health, health promotion, health education, social work or related field.
* Minimum of three to five years of experience working with young adults in a higher education setting on substance use issues with increasing scope and responsibility in the provision of services, including needs assessment, program planning, and health communications/marketing.
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and the development of multicultural competencies.
* Demonstrated ability to manage, evaluate, and improve programs in an academic environment; understanding of contemporary university student issues.
* Demonstrated ability to provide one-on-one and group substance use services.
* Experience developing and supervising peer-led programming.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and program for diverse constituencies.
* Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment.
* Excellent written/verbal/digital communication, interpersonal, and organization skills; demonstrated ability to work independently; flexibility and a high degree of professionalism.
* Experience with substance abuse education material development and desktop publishing.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

* Training and experience in motivational interviewing, alcohol screening and brief intervention.
* Experience with web design/maintenance and developing creative uses of technology in program delivery.
* Experience conducting research; experience with statistical analysis and statistical software.
* One or more of the following certifications and or licensures: Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, Certified Health Education Specialist, Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant, or the professional equivalent.

Accountabilities:

* Responsible for own work and that of the Alcohol and Other Drug Coalition.
* Supervises staff (BASICS Facilitator) providing substance use intervention services, including hiring, scheduling, and assigning work, reviewing performance, and recommends salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations.
* Supervises Graduate Assistant(s) and/or student employees (Collegiate Recovery Coordinator) and volunteers.

Physical Requirements:

* Communication with others to exchange information.
* Repeated motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers.
* Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing
