Job Description

With an overarching mission to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality of life of approximately 1.775 million older New Yorkers, the New York City Department for the Aging (NYC Aging) is deeply committed to helping older adults age in their homes and creating a community-care approach that reflects a model age-inclusive city.

The Press and Public Information Unit (PPI) promotes the agency's services and resources in the community through media and public outreach. The unit oversees internal and external communications. This includes managing press inquiries, NYC Aging's public-facing website, social media channels, the creation and distribution of marketing materials, and media campaigns. Each month, PPI also issues a Commissioner Column and an electronic newsletter to help share news, updates, and key issues to external stakeholders. In addition, the Unit organizes the agency's press events and helps prepare senior leadership and NYC Aging staff for public speaking and events.

NYC Aging seeks a creative, dynamic, and motivated college student or graduate student to serve as the Communications and Public Information College Aide, reporting to the Director of Press and Public Information. The Press and Public Information unit promotes the agency's services and priorities in the community through media relations and public-facing platforms such as the agency website, social media platforms, and marketing materials.

- The agency's public communications, press outreach, digital platforms, and media campaigns.

- The preparation of agency officials for interviews and speeches, and drafting press releases, op-eds, talking points, and briefing documents.

- The agency's press conferences and events.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Create agency marketing materials and collaterals (brochures, social media graphics, website graphics, etc.).

- Create and posting videos, photos and posts to social media and analyze the performance of content.

- Assist in the development of media campaigns and Public Service Announcements (PSAs).

- Write content for agency website and intranet.

- Perform research.

- Track relevant press coverage, devise response as appropriate, and determine whether a larger public response/strategy is warranted.

- Promote agency accomplishments through targeted media pitching, events and other creative strategies.

- Help prepare agency officials for media interviews and round tables.

- Organize press events and press conferences.

- Assist to create fact sheets, briefings, and talking points as needed for Commissioner and executive staff.
