Job Summary
School psychologists work with school teams to support and evaluate students with significant academic, behavioral and/or social-emotional problems. School psychologists provide services to students, teachers, and/or parents through classroom consultation and short-term counseling. School psychologists provide professional resources for Anchorage School District personnel and work with school teams to develop academic and behavioral interventions to assist with crisis intervention/prevention and provide suicide awareness and grief counseling. This position reports to and is evaluated by Related Services.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A master's degree in school psychology.
  2. A valid Alaska type C special services certificate with an endorsement for school psychologist.

The following are preferred:
  1. Evidence of experience working with special education students.
  2. Experience working collaboratively to support the Individual Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education student(s) in a public school setting.
  3. Experience or evidence of the ability to perform the following:
    1. Conduct functional behavior assessments.
    2. Conduct threat and self-injurious behavior assessments and participates as a member of school-based crisis response teams.
    3. Read, analyze, and interpret professional periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
    4. Use technology to efficiently manage work tasks including record keeping, report writing, communication and research.
    5. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, students, teachers, and the general public.
  4. Knowledge of the following programs or instructional methods:
  5. Manifestation Determinations, 504 Plans, Individual Education Plans, accommodation plans, and threat assessment.
  6. Response to Instruction (RTI).
  7. Regular education curriculum & appropriate curriculum adaptations.
  8. Intervention framework and practices.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Evaluates students ages 3 through 21 by gathering information to determine educational needs.
  2. Administers, scores, and interprets a variety of individual psychological tests and progress monitoring measures.
  3. Interprets the results of tests and/or observations in a meaningful fashion.
  4. Communicates results of evaluations meaningfully to those who will be directly helping the student.
  5. Works collaboratively with teachers, parents and principals to identify priority learning and behavioral objectives for pupils.
  6. Knows and recommends remedial techniques for identified student problems.
  7. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of existing laws, regulations and court decisions, which will ensure due process for all students.
  8. Assists in the identification of children whose needs may require help beyond that available within the regular school.
  9. Serves as an effective liaison between school and community by making referrals to outside agencies.
  10. Assists in the development of appropriate behavioral patterns and attitudes through individual and group counseling activities.
  11. Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of school and classroom-based interventions designed to remediate learning/behavior problems.
  12. Assists parents in individual or group meetings to develop appropriate behavioral/academic expectations for their children.
  13. Participates in and provides in-service trainings.
  14. Works collaboratively with school-based multidisciplinary teams to identify and address student's learning and/or behavior problems.
  15. Consults effectively with parents, teachers and administrators.
  16. Writes assessment reports, which conform to Psychology Department standards and completes them within established time lines.
  17. Maintains case notes regarding conferences with parents and school personnel.
  18. Maintains an accurate log of daily location(s) with secretarial staff.
  19. Adheres to professional ethical standards as established by the National Association of School Psychologists.
  20. Participates in pre-referral teams, MD teams, and IEP teams for student screening, diagnosis, eligibility & intervention.
  21. Actively participates in administrative meetings arranged by the department.
  22. Supervises paraprofessionals, teaching assistants and interns.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
