Fleet Maintenance Specialist

The City of Raleigh is seeking a devoted Fleet Maintenance Specialist to provide repair and maintenance of equipment, vehicles and related systems. Incumbents provide skilled maintenance and repair of vehicles and/or equipment in an area of specialization. Work includes diagnosing, repairing, servicing and maintaining heavy and light duty vehicles and related equipment, ordering parts, entering data into fleet management system, and maintaining other records.

* Performs diagnostics and repairs of heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment systems which may include repair of HVAC, engine, brake systems, steering, and suspension. Diagnoses and evaluates mechanical and electrical problems and determines need for repair or replacement of components, considering cost and service life of equipment and whether external service is needed
* Provides road calls and performs repairs in field as needed, requesting towing services for shop repair and/or transporting vehicles to vendors for warranty repairs
* Performs preventative maintenance of vehicles, parks equipment and equipment systems. Monitors and maintains maintenance schedules, performs front-end alignments, maintains suspension systems, identifies equipment wear or safety issues, and fabricates parts, tools and equipment as required
* Enters and updates system data related to work orders and activity; maintains activity logs, records, files and reports
* Reviews parts inventory, researches requirements and initiates orders to maintain adequate stock levels. Issues parts, equipment and supplies and maintains inventory records
* Maintains cleanliness and general organization and upkeep of shop, tools, equipment and supplies

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and four years of fleet and/or equipment maintenance experience related to assignment.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

* Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

* Valid North Carolina Class A Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, and a satisfactory driving record
* Air Certification

Knowledge of:

* Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
* Vehicle and related equipment maintenance principles and methods

* Filing and record-keeping principles
* Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
* Uses and properties of supplies and equipment

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
