Location: Fayetteville VA Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC

Scope of Care: Primary Care Physicians will provide Family Practice and interventional consultative services, including comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up, and clinic intervention. Responsibilities include complete health histories, physical examinations, patient education, and managing both scheduled and unscheduled outpatient visits. Personnel will order and evaluate diagnostic tests, recommend treatments or referrals, and document all encounters in the electronic Comprehensive Patient Record System (CPRS), ensuring records are completed on the day of the encounter.
  • Direct Patient Care: Estimated 95% of the time involved in direct patient care. Primary Care Physicians will be responsible for clinic appointments and follow-up of labs/imaging/procedures ordered during these appointments, interpretation, phone call consultation from hospitalists and intensivists on inpatients, and availability for case review with nurse practitioners on service.
  • Clinic Responsibilities: Primary Care Physicians are required to be present and punctual for all scheduled clinic start times, with adherence documented by physical presence in the clinic.
  • Medications: Primary Care Physicians must adhere to all established medication policies and procedures. Provision of sample medications to patients is strictly prohibited.
  • Discharge Education: Primary Care Physicians will provide thorough discharge instructions and coordinate follow-up care with the next care setting, particularly for emergency department patients.
  • Administrative Duties: Approximately 5% of time will be dedicated to administrative tasks, including section meetings, peer review case reviews, participation in Ongoing Providers Performance Evaluation (OPPE), and attendance at morbidity and mortality conferences as appropriate.
  • Quality Improvement Meetings: Primary Care Physicians will actively participate in continuous quality improvement activities, attending all meetings required by the facility Chief of Service or Chief of Staff.
  • Staff Meetings: Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory as required by the facility leadership.
  • Patient Safety Compliance and Reporting: Primary Care Physicians will adhere to established patient safety and infection control standards. Immediate documentation and disclosure of any incidents, including medication errors or patient injuries, are required. Primary Care Nurse Physicians must complete Compliance Awareness Training before accessing the facility and are obligated to report any observed fraud, waste, or abuse.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide on-site medical services as per the specifications of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the medical center.
  • Ensure compliance with the medical center's Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintain current competency, skills, and licensure through continuous education and meeting CME/CEU requirements.
  • Engage in direct patient care that aligns with established standards and practices.
  • Document all educational and training experiences and ensure verification is available upon request.
  • Actively participate in the management of patient health records and reporting of CME hours for credential tracking.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Technical Proficiency:
  • Proficient in English with the ability to speak, understand, read, and write fluently.
  • Responsible for maintaining full, unrestricted medical licensure in any state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Board Certification required in the respective medical specialty areas with a minimum of five years of experience within the last five years.

Required Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Current and unrestricted license to practice medicine.
  • Certification in VHA-approved Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association.
  • Experience in VA systems preferred but not mandatory.
  • Must have valid professional liability insurance.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Health and Vaccination Requirements:
  • Tuberculosis Testing. Must submit proof of a negative Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST) or Interferon-Gamma Release Assays (IGRA) for all healthcare personnel upon hire, as per CDC guidance. These tests must be current within the past year.
    • Follow-Up Measures: In cases of a positive TST or IGRA result, a negative chest radiographic report for active tuberculosis must be provided.
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR). Proof of immunity is required for measles, mumps, and rubella.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox). Proof of immunity to varicella is required.
  • Acellular Pertussis (Tdap). Proof of a single dose of Tdap vaccination is required.
  • Hepatitis B (Hep B). Must provide proof of immunity to Hepatitis B.
  • COVID-19. Proof of receiving the annual COVID-19 vaccine is required, unless medically contraindicated. Those with a medical contraindication must wear a mask throughout the year.
  • Influenza. Proof of having received the annual Influenza vaccine is required, unless medically contraindicated. Those with a medical contraindication must wear a mask during the Influenza season.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Regulation Training and Compliance:
  • Must provide evidence of having completed and passed generic self-study bloodborne pathogen training.
  • Must provide their own Hepatitis B vaccination series and hepatitis B surface antigen test results following the series.
  • Required to submit all proof of immunizations and test results.

Work Environment:
  • VHA facilities are smoke free and have a strict no smoking policy including vapes.
