The Safety and Environmental Compliance Coordinator will support the University's mission and vision through the development and implementation of safety, environmental and compliance programs to fulfill regulatory requirements.

The Safety and Environmental Compliance Coordinator is responsible for implementing and monitoring environmental, safety, health and/or compliance functions or programs for Bowie State University inclusive of the following; inspections, evaluations and/or advisement on facilities, equipment, materials, activities, and processes for compliance with the university, local, state, and federal codes, standards or regulations.

Additional responsibilities include the following;

* Safety & Health /Environmental Compliance Coordinator will be a part of the Risk Management team and will serve as a point of contact and liaise with National, State, local, and university-level compliance organizations and the University's risk management and insurance providers and as authorized, local, state, and federal agencies to ensure unit, facility and/or university compliance with codes, standards, or regulations.
* This role will conduct research, analysis, interpretation, and communication to local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to compliance of environment, health and safety management programs; develops, implements, maintains, and/or updates programs, policies, procedures, mandates, and initiatives that preserve compliance with codes, standards or regulations, in coordination with the appropriate designated university-level safety, environmental or related compliance organizations; monitors emerging legislation and regulations with potential impact on university personnel, workplaces, and environmental, safety or compliance programs and related activities.
* This role is responsible for oversight of, or performing testing, sampling or surveys of equipment, materials or environments and will collect and maintain required documentation and records of activities; compile and assess information (e.g., data, results, findings, methodologies) and prepare various reports or briefings; evaluate and develop data management procedures, resources and tools in accordance with the appropriate knowledge and/or certifications.
* The Safety/Environmental Compliance Coordinator will develop, organize, direct, and participate in meetings, conferences, seminars, training/compliance programs, and committees; provide consultation to unit staff or university as necessary on compliance programs, policies, standards or regulations, as well as communicate and disseminate information on programs, policies, standards or regulations; develop, prepare, and/or approve training materials or communications related to compliance efforts and programs, including online.
* This role will design and coordinate workplace safety and health programs and implement active efforts to identify, isolate, or eliminate hazardous operations, materials, or processes; coordinate and/or participate in responses to spills of hazardous materials.
* This position will be responsible for implementing, maintaining, and updating emergency management response plans and procedures, participating in mandated drills and investigations and fulfilling emergency management roles in the event of a crisis.
* The Safety/Environmental Compliance Coordinator will assist in the investigation, response and/or reporting of complaints, injuries, and incidents; directly collaborate with and provide information to outside local, state, and federal regulatory agencies including, but not limited to; OSHA, MOSH, NFPA, ADA, ANSI, ASME, as well as risk management and insurance providers as authorized by university-level compliance authority. This includes travel to sites and conducting root cause analysis and audits identifying risks and ensuring regulatory compliance.
* This role will work collaboratively with facilities management and across departments to ensure life safety compliance including fire systems, elevators, ANSUL systems, fire pump testing, generator testing, emergency preparedness training, ergonomics, safety testing/drills and working with local authorities, general safety measures, PPE training, industrial/chemical hygiene, waste management, wetlands, inspect, test, and evaluate workplace environment, programs, and equipment to ensure that they meet/follow government regulations.
* The Safety/Environmental Compliance Representative Coordinator will perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.

Experience

* Two (2) years of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.
* General OSHA 10/ General OSHA 30 or other Safety related certification preferred.
* Familiarity with OSHA and MOSH regulations preferred.
* HAZWOPER Certification
* Loss Control
* Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.
* Additional professional certifications/designations are welcome and will be considered with a combination of education and experience.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
* Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, equipment, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
* Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
* Knowledge of uses of chemical and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
* Strong verbal and written communication.
* Ability to partner, influence, instruct, and teach others.
* Ability to enter, track, analyze databases and develop rational and realistic conclusions based on relevant information to resolve issues brought to his/her attention.
* Ability to develop and implement new environmental and safety programs.
* Ability to supervise personnel and/or projects.
