ODH is recruiting for one (1) Researcher 2/Injury Data Abstractor in the Bureau of Health Improvement and Wellness (BHIW)/Violence and Injury Epidemiology and Surveillance Section. The Ohio Department of Health Violence and Injury Epidemiology and Surveillance Section (VIESS) is a comprehensive, state-level injury surveillance program aimed at helping every Ohioan live his or her life to its fullest potential by reducing death and disability associated with intentional and unintentional injury. VIESS coordinates surveillance systems that collect and disseminate injury and death data and assesses the burden of injuries and violence and communicates that information for the purpose of action. Priority areas are child/youth injury, drug overdose, violent deaths, and falls among older adults. VIESS includes the Ohio Violent Death Reporting System (OH-VDRS) which is responsible for collecting data on all violent deaths and unintentional overdose deaths in the State of Ohio. OH-VDRS's data sources include death certificates, coroner and medical examiner reports, and law enforcement reports. The data collected by the OH-VDRS includes valuable circumstantial information that is used to inform prevention strategies aimed at reducing deaths due to violence and injury.

What You'll Do:

* Primary duties:
* Collects, receives, and reviews sensitive detailed violent death injury data (e.g., coroner and medical examiner reports, autopsy reports, crime laboratory data, law enforcement reports) submitted to the Ohio Violent Death Reporting System (OH-VDRS).
* Codes, formats, and enters data submitted into computerized database for unintentional drug overdose deaths, homicides, suicides, and other violent death cases occurring in Ohio.
* Edits data according to national guidelines.
* Retrieves data from electronic databases for research purposes.
* Performs on-site visits to coroner offices and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to abstract coroner and law enforcement records and other types of reporting sources and enters this information remotely into provided laptop.
* Consults with reporting sources (e.g., coroners, medical examiners, and law enforcement) to facilitate data collection and submission.


* Additional duties:
* Assists in obtaining data owner participation in the OH-VDRS through outreach.
* Communicates benefits of OH-VDRS to non-traditional public health partners.
* Assists in coordination of OH-VDRS Advisory Board meetings and violence prevention professional development opportunities.
* Prepares and maintains reports.
* Develops and documents methods used for data collection, coding, and analysis.
* Develops appropriate research tools.
* Analyzes the data collected in OH-VDRS using computer software applications.
* Represents and promotes the program at public and professional gatherings.
* Provides technical assistance to OH-VDRS abstractors in appropriate methods of abstraction.
