Neuromodulation Technology Engineer

SUMMARY:

The Neuromodulation Technology Engineer is a member of a team responsible for clinical and applied research in the area of neuromodulation, which includes diagnostics and therapy for lower back and limb pain, rechargeable implantable stimulators, diagnostic wearable devices, and new applications. Typical tasks include the invention, demonstration of feasibility, and prototyping of algorithms, research platforms, and features to support new products, as well as interfacing with end users, production software, and hardware development teams during the innovation, specification, and prototyping phases of product development. The member writes software, contributes to hardware architecture, and develops prototypes to support research studies, and interfaces with IC designers to evaluate product prototypes and adapt them to research needs. The member works in a highly innovative environment, is expected to produce intellectual property and contribute to scientific publications related to their work.

Your Responsibilities
  • Design, testing, and evaluation of prototype hardware and software (requiring C, assembly, microcontroller coding) with the appropriate documentation.
  • Participate in all phases of research software/hardware prototyping, including: write feature specifications, test specifications, and design specifications for use in development projects.
  • Determine technical approaches to achieving novel functionality within and expanding the device architecture roadmap for research applications.
  • Using best practices, generate and maintain design documentation required for the project according to the Company's policies and procedures.
  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate research data using device prototypes.
  • Transfer results into intellectual property.
  • Communicate the status and results of projects to division management teams.
  • Provide input to optimize the applied research process with respect to efficiency, run-time and resources.
  • Other duties may be assigned according to program needs.

Your Profile
  • Education / Experience Requirements:
    • PhD or BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and/or Computer Science, or equivalent work experience in research environments.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
    • Strategic thinking and analytical skills.
    • Strong team player, self-motivated, self-directed, action oriented, able to learn quickly.
  • Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Experience with embedded software development, microprocessors, RTOS, proto-circuits, and/or FPGAs.
    • Experience developing software for implantable medical devices, or other devices in very low power and high-reliability environments.
    • Clear understanding of 8-bit microprocessor and/or microcontroller architecture and familiarity with at least one microprocessor/microcontroller instruction set.
    • Proven ability to develop new ideas to the level of a working system prototype.
    • Ability to design, implement and debug code for microcontroller environments.
    • Strong background in C/C++ and embedded languages is preferred.
    • Experience with circuit design, layout, and prototyping.
    • While medical system experience would be desired, it is not a minimum requirement for this role; we are prepared to train the right candidate in this regard.
    • Medical device development/ISO 14385 experience.

Location:
  • This position is located in Lake Oswego, Oregon. We have a flexible work-from-home policy, which needs to balance the need to interact with specialized test equipment. Especially this position involves complex lab setups, which can partially be replicated in a home office setting.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
