General Summary of PositionThe MedStar Health (MSH) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who functions as a clinical expert, educator, consultant, leader, researcher/evidence-based practice translator and change agent operating within a professional evidenced based practice framework that utilizes the three spheres of influence: patient/family, nursing, and system organization. The MSH CNS coordinates, coaches, educates, and leads nursing staff in evidenced-based clinical practice, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives and conducts, facilitates, or applies research to enhance patient care and outcomes. MSH CNSs practice within defined patient populations and exhibit competency through licensure and national certification.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Participates in the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of clinical services utilizing evidenced based, cost effective nursing interventions to meet the needs of a designated population Conducts comprehensive, holistic assessments of individuals within the population of expertise. Assesses age-specific and genetic risk factors for illness. Uses reliable and valid age-appropriate instruments to assess acute and chronic health concerns.Conducts pharmacologic assessments to ensure safe and effective administration of medications and interprets laboratory values and results of diagnostic studies considering the factors of age, ethnicity, and health status.Assesses patient, family, and caregiver preferences when designing and implementing plans of care. Designs a comprehensive, individualized, age and disease appropriate plan for health promotion. Acts as a patient and family advocate.Facilitates transitions of care with emphasis on quality, safety, and risk avoidance. Serves as a resource for patients and families, nursing, and other interdisciplinary providers, and as a role model for ethical practice.Leads and participates in quality improvement initiatives. Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • MSN required and
  • DSN preferred and
  • Graduate of an accredited CNS Program required

Experience
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and skills in providing direct care to a designated patient population required and
  • 5-7 years Experience as a registered nurse required and
  • 1-2 years Experience as a CNS preferred

Licenses and Certifications
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in Maryland and/or the District of Columbia required and
  • APRNs practicing in the state of Maryland and/or the District of Columbia prior to the enactment of educational required or
  • certification requirements and holding grandfathered licensure will be considered. Awarding of APRN licensure will be at the discretion of the Maryland required and
  • District of Columbia state board(s) of nursing required and
  • National CNS certification appropriate to designated population (family-individual across the lifespan, adult-gerontology, pediatrics, neonatal, women's health/gender related, or psychiatric/mental health) required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
