Associate Director of Payroll

Reporting to the SVP, Finance, the Associate Director of Payroll will have responsibility for the full-cycle payroll function at Scholar Rock. This position will also be heavily involved in managing our equity administration. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in managing a payroll process involving multiple state and local jurisdictions. This position will involve strong organization, clear communication, attention to detail and a great sense of teamwork. This position represents a great opportunity to help build a critical function at a growing and evolving, multi-product candidate biotechnology company.

Position Responsibilities:

* Oversee the process for processing payroll accurately and efficiently, including but not limited to calculating wages, processing employee deductions, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.
* Manage payroll-related reporting and compliance requirements, including tax filings, wage garnishments, and other statutory deductions. Stay informed about changes in regulations and best practices, and ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including at both state and federal levels.
* Create, update, and maintain payroll policies, procedures and internal control documents, consistent with laws and regulations, in order to ensure consistency of payroll activities, create efficiencies and mitigate risk.
* Coordinate with HR department to ensure seamless integration between payroll and other organizational functions.
* Coordinate with our external 401(k) and HSA providers and facilitate timely deposits into participant accounts.
* Assist with preparation for annual 401k audits.
* Process accurate and timely year-end reports, such as employee W-2s.
* Responsible for payroll-related accounting items such as journal entries to record payroll expense and month end accruals.
* Work with equity administration vendor to ensure changes are appropriately processed (e.g., new accounts are set up, new equity grants are uploaded, terminations are processed)
* Responsible for registering with new states as needed and maintaining ongoing compliance with all state filings.

Candidate Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field preferred
* Minimum of 5 years of experience in payroll administration in a multi-state environment
* Strong understanding of payroll processing principles, including tax withholding, wage garnishments, and compliance requirements.
* Experience with payroll software systems (e.g., ADP, Paychex, Workday) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
* Knowledge of employee benefits administration, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave programs.
* Excellent organization and communication skills, ability to multi-task, and attention to detail are must-haves.
* Experience with NetSuite considered an asset
