Crown Forum Overview

Crown Forum is an evolution of Chapel at Morehouse College that has an estimated 1,600 students enrolled per semester. It is a communal tradition that extends from the 19th century founding of the School to the 21st century institution of today. The spiritual core of Crown Forum provides a grounding space where students are connected to and develop their dynamic humanity. Gatherings are in lockstep with the Morehouse College Mission with sessions that are designed to bond students to each other through the collective experience; to heighten sensibility to students' spiritual and inner selves; to increase appreciation of the aesthetic; and to sharpen intellectual and critical faculties developed across our liberal arts curriculum.

There is special attention given to the articulation of and exposure to social justice across Crown Forum sessions. Accordingly, the radical interdependent community of students is prompted explicitly within the dimensions of justice, identity, action and diversity. Crown Forum also positions for the student scholar voices of positive social impact and progressive democracy in ways that allow for students (faculty and staff) effective touch points in their assumption of agency in the areas of unique leadership that the College demands of its Community. Speakers invited to engage students through Crown Forum are charged to center character development, social justice, leadership, and the complexities of the Black Diaspora.

Crown Forum demands of students an understanding of their responsibility with respect to servant leadership and a global citizenry.

J-Mester Overview

The Morehouse College Justice-Mester (JMester) is a winter term that positions social impact and social justice issues as central in a high performance learning community curated through courses taught by Morehouse College faculty and affiliated content experts. JMester provides the unique opportunity for learners to engage in an intensely focused and immersive "high-touch" academic experience beyond traditional methods of instruction that might take place during a regular semester course. JMester courses take place during the month of January with the College calendar dictating the specific week(s) across which classes will be taught.

General Education Overview

Our general education courses ground students in African and African diasporic heritage while empowering students to integrate knowledge and skills from their academic and co-curricular experiences. We want students to become active participants in their learning. This means our general education program is distinctive in its deliberate use of texts, examples, perspectives, and principles of black people across time and from Africa and its diaspora. Students explore themes of social justice, equity, and protest across various disciplines. Students also demonstrate a breadth of learning and develop critical intellectual skills. We see general education as a starting point for life-long work that students continue as they pursue their major, graduate from Morehouse, and go out into the world.
