Open Rank Tenure-line Faculty Position- Department of Communication
Clemson University: College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences: Communication

Location: Strode Tower- Clemson main campus
Open Date: Jul 11, 2024

Description
The Department of Communication at Clemson University invites applications for an open rank tenure-line position in communication to begin August 15, 2025. The appointment will be at the assistant, associate, or full professor level commensurate with qualifications.

Applicants should have active research agendas and teaching expertise in Communication that is in some way related to strategic communication, health communication, sport communication, or media and technology. Methodological specialization is open; however, candidates must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods in addition to their areas of specialization. Candidates will be expected to pursue external funding and contribute to graduate education at the master's and doctoral levels. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching and serving on committees at the doctoral level.

Housed in the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences (CBSHS), the Department of Communication currently offers three academic degree programs: a BA in Communication (with specializations in health communication, strategic communication, and media/technology), a BA in Sports Communication, and an MA in Communication. Additionally, planning is underway to establish a Ph.D. program in the department. The department also offers minors in Communication and Sports Communication and serves the university through two introductory general education communication courses that serve over 3,500 students each year. The department also houses the Charles Campbell Professorship in Sports Communication and is home to facilities and co-curricular activities including WSBF 88.1 FM, The Tiger newspaper, Tigervision TV network, Social Media Listening Center, Multimodal Communication Innovation Center and Research Hub, a nationally and internationally recognized debate team, and several student study abroad programs. Approximately 40 faculty (17 tenured/tenure-track, 19 full-time non-tenure-track, and several adjunct faculty), 300 undergraduate majors, 300 undergraduate minors, 25 graduate students (nearly all on fully funded assistantships), and five staff members study and work across the department's programs and engage through its facilities and co-curricular initiatives.

Interdisciplinary partnerships are encouraged across the CBSHS, which includes the Departments of Nursing; Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM); Political Science; Psychology; Public Health Sciences; and Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice; as well as Clemson Rural Health, a program focused on transforming health outcomes in rural and underserved communities across the state. Opportunities for partnerships are also encouraged across Clemson University's other eight colleges: Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Architecture, Art and Construction; Arts and Humanities; the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business; Education; Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences; Science; and Veterinary Medicine. For example, Clemson University is home to the Robert H. Brooks Sports Science Institute (a multi-disciplinary platform for the academic study of sport sciences across the University); the Media Forensics Hub (a multi-disciplinary unit focused on building society's capacity to understand the context, origins, and impact of modern media); an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design (a cross-cultural, transdisciplinary program housed in the College of Arts and Humanities); as well as a variety of innovative opportunities to work with high achieving students in the acclaimed Clemson University Honors College.

The Department of Communication is committed to educating and producing leaders who can navigate the challenges of an ever-changing global community. The department espouses an environment of collegiality and collaboration and aims to achieve goals for inclusive excellence set forth by the Clemson Elevate strategic plan. We are dedicated to promoting, advocating, and progressing inclusive excellence through teaching, scholarship, and service on campus and in the community. Communication faculty and students participate in such activities as study abroad experiences, prosocial service-learning projects, examinations of public discourse through the department's Social Media Listening Center (SMLC), and interdisciplinary grant-funded research (e.g., CDC, NIH, NOAA, NSF, USDA, WHO).
