The position of Youth Development Professional (Sports Focus) supports the planning, organizing, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of sports and fitness programs. This role leads activities primarily in athletics, while also supporting art and academic activities. In addition, the Youth Development Professional provides supervision and promotes engagement of club members.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implements, monitors, and evaluates sports and fitness programs, services, and activities to ensure the safety of members and quality in programs.
- Creates an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes.
- Recognizes club members for program participation and achievement.
- Maintains records to track attendance and participation.
- Recommends development of new sports programs and enhancement of existing programming.
- Promotes and stimulates program participation.
- Orients new members to sports programs, special events, and opportunities, as well as club safety, program, and disciplinary rules.
- Provides guidance and role modeling to members, emphasizing sportsmanship and fitness.
- Participates in training and educational opportunities to expand knowledge and skills in sports and fitness, as well as in programmatic/club staff meetings.
- Maintains order as required and disciplines club members as per company policy.
- Supervises and trains volunteers and program assistants, particularly in sports activities.
- Monitors supply needs for sports programs and informs Supervisor when supplies are needed.
- Ensures sports and fitness areas are neat and orderly, and bulletin boards and notices are current.
- Completes and submits all required paperwork on time.
- Recommends needed repairs to sports equipment and facilities.
- As needed, the position will be involved in collaborative, or engage in leading, community outreach, program extension, and club-related event activities.
- Participates as part of a team to run quality programs by helping out where needed or directed, which may include driving the club vehicles, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:
- High School diploma or GED, minimum of two years of college experience preferred.
- Combined experience and/or formal training equivalent to a minimum of two years where:
- There is experience working with youth and knowledge of youth development.
- Formal training, and/or experience teaching youth while creating engaging sports and fitness experiences.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and pass motor vehicle driving record check.
- Pass criminal background check.
- Pass (negative result) a TB test.
- CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred.
- Prior experience working in a Boys & Girls Club preferred.
- Prior experience in sports coaching or fitness training preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, and SKILLS:
- Knowledge of sports, fitness, and youth development in general.
- Skilled in creative planning, implementing quality sports programs, organizational and project management, and working toward positive outcomes.
- Ability to deal effectively with members, including disciplinary issues. Demonstrated ability in relationship building and working with young people and parents. Ability to demonstrate a professional manner in all interactions, able to facilitate a diverse group of youth effectively, and to organize time well and focus on completing assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING:
- Travel between sites and schools and various field trip sites as well as in the community is required. Must meet the insurance standards of Boys & Girls Club of Metro Los Angeles.
- Hours are based on school calendar and attendance patterns/trends - evening hours are required during the school year; hours will vary during summer and school breaks; occasional weekend hours are required.

The position involves lifting; bending; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, crouching, or crawling; frequent interruptions via in-person contact, phone calls, and email are expected. Will be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions based on activity location. Required to work around youth and adults where noise levels may be moderate to high during activities. Physical exertion may be required to lift supplies and equipment.
