Summary:
  • Under the direction of the Yard Manager and Dispatch, the Driver (CDL Class A) / Baler Operator will transport and operate a mobile baler at assigned customer locations.
  • The Driver (CDL Class A)/Baler Operator is responsible for transporting equipment and material, safely operating both Tractor Trailer and Mobile Scrap Baler and professionally interacting with customers.
  • The Driver (CDL Class A)/Baler Operator must adhere to all DOT requirements and safe equipment operating procedures.
  • The Driver (CDL Class A) /Baler Operator must also be willing to perform other duties as assigned by management.
 Essential Job Functions:Will perform the following:
  • Operate and/or drive equipment as required.
  • Safely operate the baler by applicable procedures
  • Safely operate a triaxle truck in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Conducts pre-shift safety inspection of equipment. Ensures proper maintenance.
  • Identify material in line with ferrous and/or non-ferrous grading requirements.
  • Conduct pre-trip/post-trip inspections and complete logs. All pre/post-trip inspection reports must be given to the dispatcher for DOT record-keeping compliance.
  • Identifies the need for repairs and/or maintenance to vehicles/equipment and is accountable for ensuring the maintenance or repairs are accomplished with a minimum of disruption to the operation.
  • Operate and maintain records in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), Department of Transportation (DOT), and company policies as required.
  • Ability to drive truck with manual transmission.
  • Always ensures a safe work environment for self and others.
  • Inform /communicate with the Yard personnel.
  • Ensure that the Quality, Environmental, and Safety Standards of Metalico, Inc. for production, customers, and employees are consistently achieved.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned or requested. 

Qualifications:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions:
  • Must be willing to travel within a 3 hr./150 mi range from Pittsburgh.
  • Must be able to work out of town during the week.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial driver's license.
  • Must pass a company-paid Post Offer Pre-Hire screen (physical essential functions) test.
  • Must have a valid DOT medical card or be able to obtain it before hire.
  • Safe driving record and history
  • Must not have any DUIs within the last 5 years or 2 in the last 10 years.
  • Must not have any license suspensions within the last 2 years.
  • No more than 3 moving violations within the last 2 years.
  • Must be able to satisfy all DOT QA file requirements and paperwork.
  • Must have the ability to wear/use approved applicable safety equipment, as needed. 
  • Must complete pre-employment testing.
  • Experience in operating heavy equipment.
  • Prior experience with hand tools and machinery.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits.
  • Punctual and reliable; good attendance required.
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills; must be willing to cross-train on other equipment.
  • Strong verbal communication skills; will be in contact with internal dispatch personnel as well as customer representatives.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training.
  • Ability to adhere to work schedule and follow through on challenges as they arise.
  • Ability to adhere to Company policies and rules that are set forth; promotes the Company’s safety standards; works with a sense of honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Basic math, reading, and writing English skills are required.
