Assistant General Counsel


Alliance for Downtown New York, Inc. seeks a highly motivated lawyer to join the Legal Department as a part-time employee, working 20-30 hours per week (a set number of weekly hours will be determined during the interview process). Reporting to the General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel is the primary drafter of routine contract documents and assists Downtown Alliance departments in the preparation of requests for proposals and memos for matters needing board approval.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for the drafting and execution of routine contract documents and other agreements pertaining to the work and interests of the Downtown Alliance
  • Works closely with all departments to discuss and support Downtown Alliance programming
  • Responsible for collecting and reviewing certificates of insurance from vendors for compliance with Downtown Alliance requirements
  • Responsible for reviewing licenses and other documents prepared by third parties
  • Prepares requests for proposals for various procurements
  • Assists in managing litigation by insurance company counsel
  • Oversees and manages the disposal of certain summonses, such as idling summonses, when received
  • Assists in the creation of minutes, memos and other documents needed for or related to board or committee meetings
  • Attends Downtown Alliance annual meeting and various other meetings
  • Assists the General Counsel in the preparation of memoranda and letters; legal research, and various tasks as may be assigned by the General Counsel relating to BID activities


Qualifications


  • J.D. degree and at least five years of legal experience, preferably at a large non-profit, government agency or law firm
  • Membership in good standing in the New York bar, or eligibility to practice law in New York
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Excellent people skills and willingness to be a team player
  • Hybrid position requiring an onsite minimum of two-days per week, including summer months
  • Job references are required


Salary for the position will be calculated based on number of hours employee will work per week, with a pay range from $58/hr to $70/hr.


Benefits Eligibility


Employees working a minimum of 30 hours per week will be eligible for a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, commuter benefit, Citibike membership; and, paid leave and retirement benefits. Employees working 29 hours or less will not be eligible for our benefits package.
