The City’s population is 12,353 resides within seven square miles including 4 miles of waterfront. The City provides full-city services including Public Safety (Police, Fire, EMS), Engineering, Public Works, Water and Sewer utilities, Building Inspections, Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Marina, Senior Center, Library, Finance, Clerk and Administration. THE ROLE
The Director of Parks, Recreation, & Forestry is responsible for the planning, development, and operation of comprehensive recreation programming to include aquatics, sports and leisure leagues, cultural programs, and community events, and supervision of all parks and forestry maintenance activities to include publicly owned trees and landscape with the street right of way and all trees, landscape, playgrounds, structures and facilities, and athletic fields within City-owned public parks. The Director of Parks, Recreation, & Forestry will collaborate and build strong partnerships with community organizations, recreation and sports leagues, schools, and other mission-similar organizations.
- Manages the operations of the Parks & Recreation department including preparation of annual department budgets; Authorizes and monitors expenditures; Plans, coordinates, assigns, and reviews work, supervises department staff and evaluates performance.
- Plans, coordinates, and directs a diversified year-round, City-wide parks and recreation program including the management of all rentable City park buildings and municipal swimming pool, community theater, and various fields, parks, and open spaces; Oversees the operation and management of Pirate’s Hollow Water Park.
- Assesses and monitors community needs and identifies opportunities for improving service and implementation of new program areas; Plans and recommends short and long-term improvement plans for parks and recreation facilities, landscapes and layouts, programming, and events.
- Develops and implements the City forestry program with regard to street tree and park tree pruning, removal, planting and other tree care; Identifies locations where trees and shrubs should be planted on streets, in parks, and on other public property; Selects and orders nursery stock and supervises the planting and maintenance of trees and shrubs; Reviews and approves landscape plans for proposed developments, recommending appropriate landscape and tree species.
- Maintains inventory of picnic tables, barricades, trash receptacles, benches, drinking fountains, signs, and other ancillary park infrastructure and develops plans for replacement and/or repair.
- Promotes interest in parks and recreation programs through publicity, joint program brochures with various community groups, and public contracts; speaks before citizens groups, students and other organizations; Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, community organizations, public officials, civic organizations, governmental agencies, and the general public to ensure the continuation of engaging and varied programming.
- Provides staff support for the Parks and Recreation Board.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
What does it take to succeed in this role? We’re looking for a motivated individual with strong project management skills and a willingness to learn. You should also have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Recreation Management, or related field
- Five (5) or more years of experience in municipal parks and recreation
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), or ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire
- Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of hire
