Chicago, United States CNA Full time

You have a clear vision of where your career can go. And we have the leadership to help you get there. At CNA, we strive to create a culture in which people know they matter and are part of something important, ensuring the abilities of all employees are used to their fullest potential.

CNA seeks to offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package to our employees that helps them — and their family members — achieve their physical, financial, emotional and social wellbeing goals.

For a detailed look at CNA’s benefits, check out our Candidate Guide.

Job Summary

CNA’s Long Term Care (LTC) business unit is not your typical slow-moving insurance company; we have the resources of a large company behind us and operate with a start-up mindset. With a team of 50 across multiple insurance disciplines of Operations, Claim, Anti-Fraud, Finance, Actuarial and Data Analytics, we move quickly and have a clear line of insight into how we make an impact. With approx. $14B in reserves serving 300K policyholders, CNA’s LTC business is an important strategic priority for CNA.

We are seeking a dynamic leader to bridge the domain knowledge gap between our business leaders and our LTC Data Analytics and Architecture team to help create innovative new models and solutions to help us improve our business. Leveraging Google Cloud Platform (with Looker and BigQuery), R, Python, and Alterxy, the Data Analytics Director will lead a team of technical experts that is involved in a broad range of activities including business partnering, data engineering, process redesign, data visualization, and predictive & prescriptive modeling. Key business partners will include LTC Operations, Claims, Anti-Fraud, Finance, Actuarial and IT leaders and you will be tasked with helping them unlock the power of our data.

What You Will Do

The potential of Data Analytics to drive impact within the LTC business unit is unlimited. As its leader, you will leverage creativity, strategic thinking and business partnering to tap the vast potential that exists to make an outsized impact.

  1. Lead, manage, and develop a team of technical experts.
  2. Be the face of data analytics within the LTC business unit and partner with Operations, Claims, Actuarial, Finance, and IT leadership.
  3. Lead the business unit’s efforts in all aspects of data analytics:

Business Partnering: Translate our business partner's business problems into data analytics projects and develop joint project plans to effectively manage delivery. Our business leaders have deep LTC business and operational acumen, and our data analytics team have technical data analytics expertise; a successful candidate will bring the two together to produce new and innovative solutions to solve our most impactful business problems.

Data Engineering: Maintain and enhance our actuarial data pipelines. Maintain and enhance the pipeline of data to our Google Cloud environment from third-party vendors. Create and maintain data pipelines in support of data science and data visualization initiatives across the division.

Data Visualization: Create, maintain, and provide support to other departments in the creation of new reporting using Looker, Tableau and Power BI.

Data Science: Provide thought leadership to our business partners on how to use data science to advance our strategic initiatives and deliver on new modeling projects across actuarial, claims and operations.

Corporate IT Initiative Liaison: Leveraging broader LTC team, lead LTC’s implementation of corporate IT initiatives such as data governance, data analytics upskilling, records & information management, transition to SharePoint, and IT project support of LTC.

Be a thought leader on data analytics, staying on top of current trends and software, and influencing and setting our strategic direction for data analytics.

Skills You Will Leverage

  1. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels to clearly understand business needs and translate into data analytics solutions.
  2. Strong project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously including related tools (e.g., Jira).
  3. Demonstrated success in logical problem solving and learning agility required.
  4. Strong understanding of data engineering (e.g., SQL, BigQuery, R, or Python), data architecture, and data governance principles in a cloud environment preferred. (Google Cloud Platform experience a plus).
  5. Experience building machine learning models preferred.
  6. Experience with Business Intelligence tools and data visualization platforms preferred (e.g., Looker, Tableau, Power BI).
  7. Ability to provide direction, suggest enhancements and ask the right questions to ensure advanced code bases and analytical analyses meet business needs.
  8. Provide day-to-day strategic direction and guidance to the team. Ability to creatively and effectively manage through ambiguous and challenging problems. Ability to lead through change and take appropriate level of risk.
  9. Senior level knowledge of core functions of an insurance company and general insurance.
  10. Explain and present findings, analysis, and recommendations to leadership.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Business, Economics, Mathematics, Finance, Statistics, or related field.

Experience in quantitative, analytics, data engineering, or data science roles.

Typically, a minimum of ten years of related work experience. Minimum of two years of people management experience preferred.
