Management Trainee Program

secaucus, United States Universal Logistics Holdings, Inc. Full time

Our management trainees are the future leaders of the organization. We strive to give our trainees the proper training and support to take their career to the next level. The program is designed to aggressively give hands-on experience to our trainees with the expectation for them to be in a management position within 18 months. Candidates must be able to relocate temporarily or permanently within the first 12-18 months to gain the necessary experience needed to grow their career.

Timeline of training is dependent on how well the trainee grasps each phase and a progress report is to be completed by the TM/Regional to determine readiness for next phase. If learning at a faster than average pace, trainee can advance to the next phase based on management’s discretion.

Program time length is 18 months with a breakdown as follows:

Phase 1- Months (0-9):

  • Perform the role of payroll clerk and learn all aspects of that job. Gain a complete understanding of what documents are needed to review and close out loads, and to process the driver’s paperwork. Learn how to scan then index documents, and flow loads to pre-verified status.
  • Learn the Intermodal industry and local market. Receive extensive training on our TMS system- Filemaker, and ensure understanding of its functionality. Perform in the customer service role to gain experience with order-entry, setting appointments, and knowledge of SSL’s, customers, and shipper/consignees. Gain a complete understanding of the “Data Entry” tab in the Filemaker system. Complete the Structured Training for new hires.
  • Perform the role of fleet manager and learn all aspects of that job. Focus on scheduling and dispatching drivers according to customer requests, specifications, or needs using phone, email, or in person communication. Gain a complete understanding of the “Dispatch” tab in the Filemaker system. Further enhance training on rates, line items, contractor payouts, secured storage procedures, and providing quotes to customers.
  • If in a depot location, spend 1-2 months learning the intricacies of how the depot functions. Gain an understanding of the yard procedures, M&R, and depot systems.

Phase 2- Months (9-12):

  • Focus on and perform the management functions in the home terminal location with mentorship from the Terminal Manager and/or General Manager. This would include assisting with recruiting items, contractor/driver sign ons and paperwork, compliance/safety items, accidents, loans, road service, and monthly budgets/P&L’s. If depot location, spend time with terminal or depot manager to further enhance knowledge on depot interworking’s and decision-making. If learning at a fast pace, temporary relocation to another terminal to gain exposure to their operations will be a possible option. Potential management/leadership/communication soft skills training to enhance readiness to be a manager. Schedule a trip to Warren to meet with key people, departments, and discuss the Management Trainee’s career path at this time.

Phase 3- Months (12-18):

  • Spend at least 50% of time traveling with the firefighters – the more the better. Time at home should be spent transitioning out of the local operation, and if needed, training other staff to take over their home terminal responsibilities, can provide rotating coverage for others on PTO, but should not have an assigned set of drivers for dispatch at this point.
