Your Impact

The General Counsel will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serve on the Achievement First’s Executive Team. Serving as the organization’s chief legal counsel and advisor and overseeing the Legal and Compliance Team, the General Counsel will advise on all legal matters impacting the network of Achievement First schools. As a strategic partner to the CEO and senior leadership, the General Counsel will provide critical legal guidance and partner on a multitude of strategic, policy, and business matters.

Major duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Advise the CEO and senior leaders on mission-critical strategic priorities that implicate legal, policy, governance and regulatory matters pertaining to nonprofits, charter schools and public education.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to the network and school-based staff on education law related matters, including governance, charter law, employment law, student privacy, employee and labor relations, special education, operations, real estate, finance and litigation.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Legal and Compliance Team and function, including management of attorneys and operations staff. Create and codify strong, scalable legal systems and organizational practices and policies to support high-functioning management.
  • Develop a comprehensive risk matrix and plan for identifying and managing enterprise level risk
  • Serve as a partner and advisor to the CEO and Boards on all legal and risk matters impacting the network, including operations, compliance, government relations and policy.
  • Monitor and advise on education related policy and legislative developments to advance key policy strategies and initiatives aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Review, draft and negotiate complex commercial contracts and service agreements, including leases, data sharing, licensing, and vendor software agreements.
  • Ensure the organization conducts operations according to applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Provide counsel and support at Board meetings and respond to governance related matters.
  • Oversee and manage the charter application and renewal process.
  • Develop and advise on policies and provide training to network and school-based staff on critical legal issues such as nondiscrimination, discipline, internal investigations, FERPA, public records laws, Title IX, special education compliance and other applicable legal issues.
  • Provide guidance and advice to the organization and schools on requests from government agencies and regulators for information and data.
  • Oversee all litigation and represent the organization or oversee the representation by outside counsel before all legal forums including governmental and regulatory agencies and courts.
  • Provide advice and counsel on all employment related investigations, student disciplinary matters and other internal investigations and reviews.
  • Facilitate and manage outside counsel.

Candidate Profile

  • JD from an accredited law school and admitted to practice law in New York
  • 15+ years of relevant legal experience, including in government, in-house legal, nonprofit, education and charter management organizations
  • Belief in the Achievement First mission and educational model
  • Mission driven with a demonstrated commitment to public education
  • Strong people management and influence skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to work cross functionally across different departments, teams and staff
  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills
  • Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives
  • Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks and to “see around the corner”
  • High degree of professional ethics, integrity and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

Travel Expectations

This is a hybrid role. The expectation is that the person in the role would be able to come into the Network Support office (NYC, CT, or RI) at least 2 days a week. There may be additional travel to regions outside of your own on a monthly basis.

Compensation

Achievement First sets salaries are set through a lens of equity, and based on the requisite skills, education, and experience relevant to the role. The salary for this position is $218,000. In order to uphold our commitment to equity, Achievement First does not negotiate pay. Additionally, Achievement First offers to all regular, full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid time off, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match, and paid Family Leave.
