Boston, United States Cambridge Associates LLC Full time

Firm Overview

Cambridge Associates (CA) is a leading global investment firm. We work with non-profit institutions, pension plans, and private clients to build investment portfolios that help them meet their philanthropic goals, plan obligations, or personal objectives. We offer a variety of services to complement those needs, from acting as an outsourced investment office to providing access to our world-class digital research platform. Committed to independence since our founding more than 50 years ago, we are motivated only by what is best for our clients. Our clients trust the experience, leadership, and integrity of our investment professionals. We have a global team of outstanding investment advisors and an extensive research platform to support them. With more than 1,400 employees in nine locations around the globe, we are constantly looking to discover new ideas for our clients’ portfolios. This extensive network helps us to identify and access the best global investment opportunities all over the world.

The Opportunity

Cambridge Associates has utilized private fund vehicles to support our clients for over twenty years. For most of that history, our solutions focused on vehicles that provide operational support (single investor funds/funds of one) and access to high conviction asset managers (aggregation/access vehicles). More recently, we have begun offering commingled vehicles to help our clients efficiently and equitably access certain private investment strategies, starting with secondaries transactions. Going forward, CA fund vehicles will play an even more prominent role in supporting clients and firm growth, most notably for private markets investments. To help us scale for growth, we are hiring our first ever Fund CFO, who will be a strategic and critical member of the Fund Solutions Team at Cambridge Associates. In this role, the Fund CFO will be responsible for leading fund operations and partnering closely with senior investment professionals and firm management to advance CA’s fund capabilities and launch new vehicles. Collaborative leadership, effective people, project, and relationship management (internal and external), attention to detail, and persuasive communication (written and verbal) are critical skills to be successful in this role. Further, the ideal candidate has deep knowledge and experience with respect to commingled private fund offerings and operations, especially for private market investments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all financial and operational aspects of CA’s Fund Platform (70 vehicles, 500+ LPs, ~$9B in AUM), including fund closings, cash management, accounting, investor reporting, audit, valuation, and tax functions.
  • Lead and develop a high performing team of fund accounting and operations professionals.
  • Oversee external fund service provider relationships, including contract and fee negotiations.
  • Ensure CA’s funds are compliant with LPA terms and regulations (in partnership with CA Legal and Compliance).
  • Partner closely with investment and operations professionals to advance the capabilities of CA’s Fund Platform, including the following:
  • Design and launch of new funds.
  • Design and implementation of cash management processes for CA’s commingled fund vehicles, including best practices for utilizing a commitment facility.
  • Design and implementation of performance reporting and analytics standards for CA’s commingled fund vehicles.
  • Partner closely with management to develop carried interest strategy and governance.
  • Partner with investment professionals on the financial aspects of potential secondaries and co-investment transactions.
  • Manage processes for internal financial forecasting, budgeting, and reporting pertaining to CA’s fund platform.
  • Advise on long-term business and financial planning.
  • Support business development and fundraising development efforts, as needed.

Requirements

  • Private fund CFO experience.
  • 15+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles.
  • Deep knowledge of how private funds operate – e.g., fund development/launch, fundraising, investing, operations, investor relations, regulatory requirements, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with private markets asset classes (e.g., private equity, venture capital, credit, real assets); ideal candidate has experience with private markets fund of funds, secondaries, and co-investments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Economics; MBA, CPA, and/or CFA strongly preferred.

Skills

  • Collaborative leader.
  • Effective people, project, stakeholder management.
  • Persuasive communicator.
